Argentina

Argentina football team has been kicked out of the 1/8 finals. Another champion out of the world cup ;-).
It is almost a sign of a good team not being in the finals, so we’re a champion after all.

regards,

RE: Argentina

Correction accepted, Snowman.

I apologise.

I would be disgusted if anyone considered me a xenophobe, but that is what my post essentially marked me out as. My excuse is that I am mentally fatigued from some of the most demanding exams (Tax Planning, Financial Reporting) of my life!

Once again, apoligies to Keltic and indeed to any Argies reading.

RE: Argentina

Steady on there, mate.

I don’t think talk such as this will make matters better. Pride in your nation is a fine thing, but there’s enough hatred flying around in the world without encouraging it. (I mean the tabloids do that already; remember Euro 96 and the ‘Achtung Surrender’ headline?).

Like somebidy said, patriotism is the love of your country, and xenophobia is the hatred of all others. I really don’t think we need to put more oil on the fire….

I don’t think the Argies will laugh at us.

In 1982 we kicked their arse
In 2001 we literally kicked their arse

And our country hasn’t gone bankrupt either. Nor did we base our post-WW2 strategy on providing a home for Nazis.

Snowman,

Just to clarify – what I meant was that the factors I outlined were applicable when looking at any team OTHER than your own.

I hope Britain won´t be eliminated and you´ll have to see the Argentinians laughing at you at the street. I think you wouldn´t be amused. In any case, despite I don´t care football at all, good luck to anyone.

RE: Argentina

There was an interesting piece in the Daily Mirror yesterday. The author explained that now that England have defeated Argentina, maybe some of the myths can be layed to rest.
He mentioned the 1986 game obviously, but also pointed out that in 1966 the Argentinians may have had a point in complaining about the sending off. He also said that the foul on Owen which resulted in an England penalty vs Argentina in 1998 was dodgy. His conclusion was that it might now be an appropriate time to ackowledge that England too have not always been free from blame.
I hasten to add that as far as I could tell, he is an English reporter and not a foreign hack with an axe to grind.

I must admit that the Argentinian jeering and laughing at the English players after the game in 1998 was a disgrace. You can tell a lot by the way people handle defeat as well as victory, and even allowing for the bad blood between the two countries, this behaviour was shocking and utterly disgusting.
And one has to point out that the little tricks of the trade, the cheating, the mind games (like Simeone trying to shake Beck’s hand before the penalty this year) leave a nasty taste in the mouth. They have a lot of gifted players. It’s a shame that their behaviour on and off the pitch doesn’t match these abilities. And it’s easy to see how such a behaviour would not endear them to other countries.

Mongu, I’d like to add one thing to your remarks about support: I think you have understated the national side of things in your post. Some of us also obviously support the team which represent our country. Even when they are not shining out on the pitch, we still want them to do well.

RE: Argentina

I always strive to keep an objective view and value fair play highly in all things.

HOWEVER, I have to admit to being pleased to see the Argentinian team getting knocked out.

The arrogance they displayed pre-match naming theyre team days ahead because they didnt think we could do anything to win anyway!. The behaviour of theyre team in 1998 even after they only just squeaked through on penalties and of course the consistent attitude of one former wearer of the blue and white no.10 shirt all make me believe that the second round will be better without them.

RE: Argentina

If I follow a particular foreign team at a tournament, I do so because of the football they play. That is why so many neutrals have a soft spot for Brazil, Holland and even Spain.

You are perfectly correct when you say that the arrogance is on the part of the players, not the supporters. The same applies to France. But having seen this arrogance, I want them to go home. The passion of football is about 11 men vs. 11 men, and the consequences at home for the losing team don’t bother me. It isn’t my fault that Argentina’s economy is in a mess!

No one “deserves” anything in football, irrespective of their domestic situation. That would be like hoping that Senegal beat Denmark just because the average person in Senegal is poor by comparison to the average Dane. I want the best team to win – the team that is better to watch.

RE: Argentina

No Mongu, I don´t agree. I would never be joyful for any country to be sent back home, specially for those who suffer. Players may be arrogant, but they represent a whole country and nobody can say that a whole country is arrogant unless one knows every single individual which is something really difficult. Resentment should never be focus to football or any sport. And I have to add, that the first ones, who suffered the madness of the Falklands invasion where the civilians and the Argentinian population.

RE: Argentina

Different perspective I guess, Keltic.

There is joy here about the Argentine exit. That country is tinged with enmity for most English people. Mostly in a footballing sense, because Argentina always cheat against England and they do not play fair. But also, being politically incorrect, there is resentment from when they invaded the Falklands.

Also, they were very arrogant at the World Cup and arrogant teams deserve to go home!

RE: Argentina

I felt really sad for Argentina. I live in a place where 1.000.000 people in Buenos Aires has galician origen. So we use to have relatives there. We are really concerned and worried about their difficult situation and at least, this could be a relief for them. But they´re out. Sad for them.

great World Cup, but maybe it’s not because of them as champions faced “upsets”, but that now there are serious challengers from other parts of the world. Make it much much more interesting.
