Argentina Doesn’t Want to Discuss the Falklands…

As has been pointed out previously on this topic….

They might have the military power to take the islands, and the UK doesn’t have the power to re-take them. No carriers, no SHARS, no Vulcans, no Nimrods or any MR capability…yes, you can nuke them with your subs, but that’s about it.

I’m not expecting anything to happen soon. But if they were so inclined, now would be a good time to do it.
IMHO: A classic case of a credible defense helping to keep the peace. 🙂

As far as I know, the only people who will benefit from any oil revenues will be the Falkland Islanders; the United Kingdom treasury will (thankfully) get nothing…

…and the Islanders will be richer than Saudi Arabia! 😀

Just think, the Islanders could “Lend” us the money they make from the oil, and clear the National Debt up…;)

Exactly right. So, as I said above, whenever the Argentine is economically in a mess, we hear the Malvinas drums beating to try to take attention away from the parlous state of the economy and the prospects for its people.

Seriously, the Argentine economy is in a poor state (again); I think inflation is running at about 30% and the government may have to default on major loans (again). Argentina already has trouble borrowing money on the international markets and pays high interest to do so. Even there was oil in the Falklands I do not think it would solve all the problems in the Argentine economy.

I bet it’s all about the oil that we are drilling for. Funny how it all kicked off again when they found out that’s what we are doing.

Well of course actually it has everything to do with who “owns the Falklands”. The Argentine wants the oil lying within the British territorial waters. So you are 100% correct in your first sentence.

Exactly and so a great deal of diplomatic time is being wasted.

I think that I’m right in thinking, that Israel has ignored all UN resolutions passed in ref to their actions over many years. They also refuse to deal with the government of Palastine, which they do not recognise.

So it should not be a surprise, that Argentina will also not talk to a government that it does not recognise.

Argentina have so far ignored all UN resolutions on the issue and continue to press for ownership. Kind of hypocritical, isn’t it?

Well, that’s part of the Argentine argument I think; they don’t recognise the Falkland Islands government.

The BBC article states that:

“Argentina’s president, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner urged the [United Kingdom] to abide by a 1965 UN resolution to ‘negotiate a solution’ to the dispute.”

But how can Argentina and the United Kingdom ‘negotiate a solution’ without including the Falkland Islands government in the discussion? The UN puts great emphasis on the right to ‘self determination’ but clearly Argentina thinks that its case is strengthened if it continues to treat the Falkland Islands as a British colony…

…and were the Argentines thinking about that 1965 UN resolution when they invaded the Falklands in 1982? I guess not! :rolleyes:

No worries, the forces stationed there are more than capable of holding off the entire Argie military. They know it, we know it.

All they do his huff and puff and hope some over sensitive EU bureaucrat tries to pressure the UK into relinquishing it’s “imperial control over the hapless islanders“.

The worse the state of Argentina and its leadership the more it will huff and puff over this. It’s an irrelevance.

Why would they? The Argentinian argument is self defeating, and they must know that it isn’t taken seriously by anyone.

How can a nation created by colonialism (Argentina), hope to resolve a scenario created by colonialism, with yet more colonialism.
