Armstrong Whitworth Ablemarle

hi all,

i find myself with a problem, these aircraft were skinned with plywood, do’s anyone know how the plywood was fastened to the tubular frame, and were the fasteners visible from the outside, or were they covered in fabric?

thank you for any help given.

ps, are Armstrong Whitworths records/drawing/photos kept at coventry museum?

So the remains of the cockpit that are left and being restored at the moment consist only of the tubular construction as shown in the previous post?
Not much is it? But it’s a start at least.
Cheers

Cees

Good guess Cees! Found the picture I was looking for.

The manual reprint and the original AP copy I have for that matter don’t have the pitures as photgraphic prints as does the AFEE report. Only photographic prints allow you to enlarge them and keep the detail.

Is this picture any use?

Those pics and more can also be found in the RAF Airborne Forces Manual printed by the RAF Museum. Several drawings too but sadly probably nothing relevant to construction as it’s mostly to do with the parachute/glider aspects of the aircraft.

I have a few pictures somewhere of a few of the bits Dave Stansfield has. Next question though is where…….hmm…… Wrote to him a couple of years ago and he was good enough to send some pictures with his reply.

Have just spent half an hour searching around the house for a book that should help answer your question. Its title is ‘Aircraft for the Royal Air Force’ subtitle The ‘Griffon’ Spitfire The Albemarle Bomber The Shetland Flying-Boat.
Author Michael J.F.Bowyer printed by Faber & Faber 1980.
The author states that the wood would be fastened to the structure with synthetic resin glue without intervening fabric. But fabric covered the outside!
The Albemarle was the most expensive aircraft built up to that date £6 million pounds for development, twelve sets of of airframe parts and two prototypes!
The previous most expensive aircraft which had been cancelled cost £500 thousand for the airframe and £300 thousand for the engine which was used in other aircraft thank goodness!
If you can beg borrow or buy this book do so..

David Stansfield likes to keep a low profile so it seems, any pics of the Albemarle sections he has, perhaps this forum can be of help in the quest for parts etc.

Wink wingk nudge nudge

Coventry Council’s History Centre at the Herbert Museum do hold a small amount of AW material but I don’t think it includes any Albemarle stuff. You could try B.Ae’s heritage section and there is David Stansfield in Burnley who has “The Albemarle Project” (contact address in Wrecks & Relics).

Whilst we are at it, are there any good books with details (pictorial) of the Albemarle available ?

I need more detail for the Blender model I’m working on (below).

Can’t help you with your first question personally..

Best thing for the second is to contact the Museum directly:

(02476) 301033 or email to: midlandairmuseum@btconnect.com

Ask to speak to Barry James (Chairman) about AWA records held at the Museum – he’s the one to know!
