Arromanches Mulberry through Moggy's lens

Coming back from Dinard on Sunday took me over the remains of the harbour so I clicked off a happy snap.

Do calm down Bruggen.

And while you are at it read the Webmasters post at the end of the RIAT Photos poll thread.

What a bl**dy lame excuse for puting up photos with no Aviation content
whatsoever, why not post pics of the London Underground or an anderson shelter
and many troops were protected by a hole in the ground. one mention of a P51 in the whole thread. And your going on about a few photographers posting some pics of RIAT.

PS. To Damien and the other Photographers that post on here, when you go somewere else please let us know. 😡

Hmmm. Location ‘Blackpool’…. ‘Boddington Poisoning’ is such a cruel affliction

Desperately amusing Mike

Photographed from an Historic aircraft, extensive use of the Mulberry in an anti-aircraft role protecting troops against what are now historic aircraft.

Moggy, thanks for posting this I am sure many a pilot from all those years ago would have had a much different view of this area then with the fear of being the next cannon fodder.

I was thinking that at the time.

Bimbling along in the sunshine at a steady 80 knots with Mrs Moggy chatting happily alongside me, the town and the harbour basking in the sunshine below, speedboats, sunbathers, the land un-pockmarked….

So very different from what I imagine it would have looked like in July 44

The museum re Arromanches is fascinating, there are squadron badges, plaques, crests of all the allied forces who took part in the liberation of this area, and apart from knocking 10 tons of cow dung out of the place the Brits are most welcome by most of the French people.

The view from the hill above the town re the Mulberry Harbour at low tide shows what a masterpiece of engineering all of this was as the harbour was not intended to last much beyond 5 years, so 60 years later it is still there ……………..

Moggy, thanks for posting this I am sure many a pilot from all those years ago would have had a much different view of this area then with the fear of being the next cannon fodder. The War Cemeteries (from friend and foe, soldiers, sailors and airmen) dotted all along this coast bears a poignant reminder to what price freedom our forefathers trod to give most of us the freedom we enjoy today.

Lest we forget………….

…the french security forces were hideous that week,

Weren’t they?

I found the only way to make any progress was to drive up to the roadlblocks, point to the next cemetery on our Major and Mrs Holt’s map and swear blind we were visiting my Father’s grave

If you want to examine one of the components closely there’s an example on the beach at Arromanches, and a nearby museum with a huge working model and recorded information. Well worth the trip.

Moggy

When I took my late father back to the scene of his invasion exploits in 1994, the french security forces had gone particularly mental and had positioned a sniper in that casson, and it was quite disconserting to see him aiming at us with his telescopic sights, the french security forces were hideous that week, I’ll never forget it having nearly been shot myself, but thats another story, the flybys were good though, especially the french P-51 over the breakwaters at Arromanche, which one was it?

The Mullberry harbour was designed by J D Bernal, it was made from hollow concrete sections called Cassions.

What’s left?

Shoreham by Sea, in the shanty ship community – lots of ex RAF launches and seaplane tenders, even an MTB turned into a houseboat is a Mulberry Cassion…with someone living in it – heartily recommend a visit next time you go to the aerojumble there – can walk along the towpath and imagine whether the merlins have been removed from some of them….

The idea of getting close to the Richard Montgomery scares the living daylights out of me…

According to last summer’s article in “New Scientist” the closer you are to it the safer! Should it go “phut” then, while there will indeed be a most impressive bang just off Sheerness and lots of merde falling out of the sky, the major effect is likely to be a wave – a mini-tsunami if you like – which will build as it travels (again, tsunami-like).

Sheerness is too close for the wave to reach any height enough to cause damage – just the falling merde to worry about – but it’s places like Thameshaven oil terminal on the other side of the estuary that need to worry. Think about something the size of the Boxing Day tsunami hitting an industrial installation pumping oil ashore – 😮 😮 😮

Personally though should the worse happen I’d like to be a VERY long way away with a considerable supply of clean drawers!

That second pic reminds me of Arawan prison – the futuristic penal colony in the movie Face/Off 😮

Great stuff, though.

There is a chance to view the Southend Mulberry from the “other side” later this year from on board the Waverley paddle steamer from Southend Pier, Tilbery or Tower Pier in London.

the trip is on Sunday 2nd October
10:00am Tower Pier rtn 8:15pm £33
1:30pm from Southend rtn 4:45 £16.95

The trip also takes in the Thames Forts depending on weather depends on how far out you go last year it was very windy very wet so we were only able to get to the Red Sands forts (8miles off Sheppy) before we had to turn round and go down the Medway passing the wreck of the Richard Montgomery.

The previous year we were able to get out as far as Knock John 12 miles off Herne Bay.

Harbour?

Shouldn’t this be posted in the Naval forum? Perhaps Blue Robin should start a poll. 😉

Haven’t you got something better to do? GD needs this sort of input since Mark 9 has left.
