You may know that the Arrow Active at Shuttleworth has been put up for sale , not by the collection but by Desmond Penrose who owns it.
I dont know the price, how do you price a unique aircraft ?, but i’m sure its beyond the collections budget.
So what fate is in store for it ? who would be interested in buying it other than a collection like Shuttleworth?.
Sallis collection ? US buyer?( i think i would have to chain myself to the hangar door to protest if that were the case).
The Active is a beautiful little aircraft that deserves to be at Old Warden, lets hope by some means thats where she stays.
PS I would upload a picture if i knew how!!!

Did we actualy manage to find out if anything has happened to the Arrow Active??

Was there any other nice shots he allowed you to copy?

Interesting photos, Are they from your own collection?
The Active shot is from Alex’s personal photo album. which he kindly allowed me to copy many years ago. Not sure where I got the other … had it for years.

Alex Henshaw
Couple of shots of Alex’s aircraft. The Active Mk I, taken at his private strip, and the Tomtit in its wartime markings – possibly taken at Castle Bromwich.

Is there any other Tom**** out there? Even bits of them?
By: ollieholmes - 18th November 2005 at 00:33
Yes i remember that article. Great article. I didnt realise he had 3 of the Tom****. It says what happened to 2 of them but not the third so thats why i asked.

There was an article earlier this year in Aeroplane about AH’s Tom****. Including pictures of OW’s prior to aquisition with the headrest and Spitfire windscreen.

Damm. What a great shame. I knew that Tomtit is the only one in the world i was just wondering what happened to Henshaws other one.
By: TEXANTOMCAT - 17th November 2005 at 14:39
Yep – IIRC the other Tomtit was written off in an accident by another pilot shortly after they were acquired by AH -Sigh for a Merlin mentions it.

And he owned the Tomtit during ww11 and flew it as his personal transport. He had another 2 tom**** as well there. 1 he wrote off hitting a parked spitfire and can anyone tell me what happened to the other?
By: TEXANTOMCAT - 17th November 2005 at 14:26
Yep- spot on, well done that man.
There were only two Actives ever built – Alex Henshaw bailed out of the other one!
(Also the Mew Gull and Active were owned by the same person whilst at OW)

The link:
They where all based at shuttleworth
They all have some link possibly to Alex Henshaw (definatly the tomtit and probs the gull)
After that i dont know. I thought i had seen the mew gull at shuttleworth this year.

Owned/ based at the same place as the Mew Gull – with Toff Smuth at Brietown – strong link between the two aeroplanes in more ways than one…and with the Tomtit – you’re an Oldwardian Ollie – d’you know what it is?

Sorry been away from the world of aviation for a few years. Got distracted by typically teenage things. I dont need to say more but lets keep to the subject of this lovely little aeroplane
