Hi everyone – out of curiousity – does anyone know what happened to the remains of this aircraft after it was destroyed at Sunderland a few years ago?
Thanks
Elliott

Valetta VX577
The remains of this aircraft were scrapped on site some small parts were retained for the Valetta at Norfolk & Suffolk.
A complete propellor assembly with cowling, one undercarriage leg complete with tyre retained by NEAM along with a section of geodetic and the two serial numbers. One serial number was subsequently given to the owner
One Hercules engine was saved and passed onto South Yorks Aircraft Museum.
I know this to be correct as I started the scrapping process by cutting off the port outer wing one Saturday so that the Canberra could be moved to its current position.
Prior to scrapping the owner was happy for all of the parts to be passed on to those who may have needed them.
At the time there was little or no interest from within BAPC
The rest of the remains were removed from site and processed quickly through a yard near Newcastle.

Whitley
I’ve checked the details out with those in the know and it seems that the remains were scrapped on site by the owner. The wings were ct up and taken away as was the remainder of the fuselage. Unfortunately I was not able to contact the owner so was unable to get the details of the scrappy – though very little would be available for salvage.

I’m not sure which scrap yard they went to – but I can try and find out. The aircraft was privately owned and so the owner disposed of the remains. One or two small bits and pieces were retained by the museum but I think they were mainly the props.

That’s great Troy – thanks.
Do you know what scrap yard the remains went to? I am looking for a pair of Valetta wings.
Cheers

Did anyone manage to save the rebecca type aerials from the cockpit? We still need one!!!!!

Most of the airframe was reduced to ash because of the high magnesium content in it. At least one of the propellors was saved for display at the museum. Any other small items that could be salvaged were offered to the other museums with Valettas. The rest unfortunately was scrapped. No one to this day has been charged with the arson attack.

One that we had some problem with once, pilot reported that the tail trim wasn’t quite right, so we got to work on it and sorted it.
