Artistic Warbird pics?

Inspired by some of Patrick Bunce’s inside cover pics in the books ‘Thunder in the Heavens’ and ‘Spirits in the Sky’, I have been trying when time allows to do some long distance silhouette/dramatic lighting/cloud silhouette pics of my own with various results, but was’nt OVERLY dissappointed with these attempts from a few weeks ago during the Collings Foundation’s stop through nearby Loveland, CO….what have you guys got in this category, you know, sunset shots, silhouettes…anything that makes the plane in question look ‘other worldly?’

Hmmm…my 300th post…do I win a cookie?

I’ve got a nice one of a Fokker Dr1 against a cloudy sky at Duxford in 2000, if anyone’s interested. It’ll be a few days before I can get it on the thread (PC issues)…

Good stuff, folks, GOOD stuff…Gareth, when I started out shooting these birds lord knows how many years ago, I worked with a photographer who swore by TMAX 100 B&W print film, so a good part of my collection (and indeed my partner’s) early shots of warbirds are on balck and white film…but then we kept getting told by the older pilots “Ya know, they invented COLOR film during the War!!”…so we transitioned to full color from then on..However…during my recent shoot with the Collings bombers here in Colorado…I DO seem to recall I had an extra roll of TMAX in the bag and I THINK I busted it out and shot it! If I did and the results are worth a darn, you’ll see them on here…

Very nice Mark, I’m always keen on these sort of shots.

Much as I love the results of todays super telephotos on a D-SLR, there’s something timeless about this sort of photograph. A small silhouette against a huge cloudscape or mountain range epitomises the fragility of these craft and their occupants flying into harms way 60 years ago.

Think you’ve earned your cookie with those 🙂 , ever considered presenting any of them as black and white?
