I’ll second what Moggy C says. We force loved ones through all kinds of indignity and pain just to satisfy the “moral” need to preserve life, when it is possible to bring about a swift and painless end.

We are able to grant our pet cats and dogs a swift, painless release from suffering, yet we don’t allow our fellow humans a dignified end. Instead we have to sit by their beds and watch the inevitable and degrading progress to the end over weeks and months..
