[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-04-02 AT 10:10 AM (GMT)]Is India developing the Astra on its own or with the help of Russia. There was talk some time back that French help would be taken. Is it going to be a copy of the A-12.Think it would be a better idea for them to go in for Russian or French joint development looking at their record of devoloping the Akash,Nag and Trishul.

YDERABAD: The test flight of the air-to-air missile, Astra, which was expected to be held this year, would be delayed. The missile is still in its design stage and the government is yet to release the funds required to complete the project.
The project reportedly is awaiting a final clearance from the central government.
Developed by Defence Research and Development Laboratories, Astra is described as a beyond-visual-range (BVR) air-to-air missile with a 100 km head-on range and a tail range of 15 km.
The missile is intended to have performance characteristics similar to the R-77RVV-AE (AA-12), which currently forms part of the IAF’s missile armoury.
The missile is 3.8 metres long and is said to be configured like a longer version of the Super 530D, narrower in front of the wings.
Astra uses a solid-fuel propellant and a 15 kg high-explosive warhead, activated by a proximity fuse.
