Today (Sept 9th) has seen the honouring of the Air Transport Auxiliary, with an event at their historic home airfield, White Waltham, before the veterans were taken into London to meet the Prime Minister for presentation of medals and honours.
Despite the gloomy weather, a little spell of sun blessed the flying display, which included the Vacher Hurricane and Cliff Spink in the Spitfire PL344.
Also present was the Shuttleworth Anson, and various other light aircraft.
I managed to speak to Raymond Roberts ( 90+ years) who had flown 75 types, including all the types which attended the event, as well as Lancasters, Mosquitos etc. There was also a showing of RAF top brass,
The media was much in evidence, and will no doubt include some coverage in evening news reports and Wednesday’s press. Though they have been dubbed ‘The Forgotten Pilots’ , today was ample proof that many of us do remember, with the greatest of admiration and respect.
Overheard- a middle aged woman peering into the Spitfire cockpit.
‘It’s funny, grandma could barely drive the car at the best of times, quite amazing how she managed in one of these!” :D:D

I’d like to remember two more ATA pilots who’ve drawn their last ferry chits – George Garland and Mike Armstrong whom I had the privilege of knowing.

It is actually spelt Diana Barnato Walker who was the grand-daughter of the ‘South African’ diamond millionaire Barney Barnato

who was mentioned recently on the BBC ‘Who do you think you are’ for Esther Ranzen

An opportunity to remember one of the ATA “greats” Diana Banato Walker who recently left us.
I am sure you were there looking down on things, Diana!

Nice pics. A marvellous event and amazing people.
It is rather humbling to meet people who have done so much, yet remain so quiet about what they achieved.
