I am seeking information on the loss of a Typhoon on 14th November 1942. The Typhoon was on a ATA delivery flight either from or to Coventry.
Any help appreciated.

The Banbury in this case is Banbury Farm which is on Brown Clee.
According to afleetingpeace.org this was Walter Mason’s first accident having safely delivered 482 aircraft.

On looking closer, the book says crashed Banbury, Shropshire… I suspect the mix-up was due to 5 FPP being based at Thame, near to Banbury in Oxfordshire – perhaps that was the departure point?

If it is DN251 then the aircraft flew into Brown Clee in Shropshire. F/C Mason is commemorated on a memorial, along with many others, at the top of the hill. There is, or certainly was, a large piece of engine mount from this aircraft at the Warplanes Aircraft Recovery Group Museum at Slepe.

According to Thomas and Shore’s ‘Typhoon and Tempest Story’ none were lost on that date – the nearest non-squadron match is DN251 0f 5 Ferry Pilot Pool (ATA) which crashed in bad vis near Banbury, killing F/C W. Mason on Nov 21st, which would be the same day of the week.
