ATC 2 wheeled caravan

Trying to find a real example to measure. There was one with the North Weald Fire section a few years ago and another with a gliding club in Kent/Sussex. Any help or leads please ? If anybody knows who made them believed to be on a Straussler trailer bed . A picture here : http://www.usaaf.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=29&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

Hi Goncarlo,

Now I know that one exists at Rougham I plan to visit this spring to measure it up . Many thanks and will keep you informed . Anybody from Rougham who could provide access information ?

Hello!

Did you go to Rougham? I Only see your post today, so I went anxious with expectations of photos and stuff!

Best regards,

single axle caravan

From the rotabuggy jeep, assuming that the wheelbase is the same taht of the normal willys jeep, 80 inch., scaled from the photo above, gives a 188.5 inches to the caravan lenght. Assuming the distortion on the photo angle and depth, I consider 190 inches to be a credible dimension. Based on this I’m thinking do draw a plan of it, at least, exterior views, as I barely had seen any photos of the inside.

If anyone can give a contribute, please do!

Checked this morning and NAM now only has one Airfield Control Unit, which is a 2 axle / 4 wheeled unit!

PM me with an email address if you would like a picture – sadly out of space on here! 🙁

Thanks for the info people.
Yes Keith I have visited AIX and love the 448th caravan photograph. These were the twin axled 4 x4 built by Brockhouse of West Bromwich. It is the origins of the single axle 2 x2 that I am finding elusive.

Photo evidence that using a caravan to produce a cheap trailer is not a new idea.:D

This has to be the chassis of a two wheeled control caravan. But probably no help in your quest, unless you can use the Fa 330 and Jeep (Hafner Rotabuggy by the way) to scale from.

The only jeep with an air speed indicator

T-21. Have you been to AIX ? Airfield Information Exchange website ?
There are a few photos of two wheeled ATC caravans on this thread, hope the link works.

Keith.

I posted a photo on AiX regarding Pundit light trailers. A very knowledgable chap on there pointed out that the trailers were by Brockway. This being based on the axle design. Rather than mounted on leaf springs, they have their own torsion suspension built in. One of your images clearly shows that type of axle. I may be wrong here…usually am!

Thanks for replying gentlemen,
Some help but need to discover more as these caravans information is going to get lost in time,if we don’t record it now.

IIRC NAM displays two different vans – but I’ve never counted the wheels!

I will try to find time to do so tomorrow! 😀

I used to include these caravans in my pictures, IIRC the British ones favoured Lancaster and Americans B17. It seems to be a ‘local’ mod as no two vans are identical, but a great inclusion to a picture or modelling diarama, sometimes to the detriment of the subject matter itself.

Just out of interest, was the two wheel caravan a localy made item?
I’ve only ever seen the four wheeled versions officially refered to.
Also are the cupolas made from B.17 nose glazings?

Thanks for replying Spitfireman,
It is the single axle 2 wheel type I wish to view. Is there still one at Old Buckenham or North Weald ? If anybody knows the company name that manufactured them would be most grateful ?
