Atlanta visit

Going to Atlanta GA on business in the New Year. Does anyone know if there are any museums or local airfields with vintage machinery worth going to see please?

Steve – I think the Carvair’s are both still operating out of Griffin so that would be my first port of call !

Forgot about Warner-Robins – good call India Romeo. I never made it to the museum there so no wonder I forgot it! Have heard good things, dunno why I neglected to go there myself.

Macon is about an hour and a half, two hours tops drive from Atlanta. Griffin is about half way there so you could combine the two if you liked!

Thanks guys, plenty of food for thought, and I’ll take up as many of your suggestions as I can (“work” permitting!)

Any idea how long would it take me to drive to Warner-Robbins?

Re: Atlanta Visit

How about a short trip south of the city to visit the museum at Warner Robins AFB, near Macon GA? Lots of heavy metal (the usual Buff, B50 SR71 etc) but also a P51 and (I think) P47 etc, with aircrft displayed both outdoors and in new indoor area. I made the detour a few years back, and it is a well run museum with lots to see…they had a ‘hands on’ Electronic Warfare simulator from a B52, which was a first for me.

Not too much to see in Atlanta – though I moved away a year ago I spent about 7 years there and scoped out what little there is to see aviation wise.

Probably the only draw is Dobbins AFB, located just north of town in Marietta. Some interesting plane watching there – Lockheed has a large facility on base so lots of action. F-16s, F-18s, C-130s, P-3s and others are daily visitors. Couple of interesting static planes on base including a B-29 and an F-101.

Peachtree-Dekalb airport was a WWI Army and WWII Navy training field – pretty busy these days with corporate jets and general aviation stuff. Airport restaurant “The Downwind” has nice runway view – have a burger and a beer and watch some planes. Decent lunch spot for the aviation inclined.

South of town is where most of the interesting action is – Griffin/Spalding airport about 45 mins south is a nice sleepy field home to a DC-3 cargo operation. Lots of stuff to see, never been disappointed on a trip down there. Couple of P-51s fly out of local fly-in communities and use Griffin as a refuel/jumping off point – Delta Airlines’ DC-3 uses Griffin for proficiency training, several folks doing rebuilds and restorations of older types. Worth a look.

Hope you have fun, unfortunately Atlanta is a better spot for US Civil War history than it is for aviation. If you have a few days to kill I’d rent a car and drive down to Pensacola and see the Naval Air Museum – now that is worth seeing!!!
