There’s often the subject of whether or not Attack helicopters are needed. I say instead of debating that, we should debate to what roles they would be useful in, and what roles where they are nothing but an expensive and vulnerable silver bullet.
To start off I would argue that attack helicopters should be exclusively used for armed recon roles as well as armed utility/infantry carriers.
For these roles I would say smaller/lighter helicopters such as the Japancheese OH-1 and Augusta Mangoosta is sufficient
while I’ve found very little competition for the Mi-24 in the latter role of supporting the landing of troops.
Fatsos of helicopters such as the Apache, Havoc and Rooivalk are too heavy, too expensive and too vulnerable for the roles they were intended to do, especially when now there are better alternatives exist.
