Attn. Richard W – Spitfires!

Some homebuilt Spits…

C-FXYA – built by Ed Johancsik of Canada, based on the Taylor Titch. One-off.

Isaacs Spitfire – designed and built by John O Isaacs. Plans available.

MJ100 – Built by Bob DeFord, full-scale and features an Allison engine. Cost Bob less than $250,000 to build, all told.

Spitfire Mk1 – Charles Longstaff built this one in Canada, powered I think by a Chevy V8 (or a V6??). Another one-off, and apparently for sale.

CF-CEW – another one-off, although this time powered by a 200hp air-cooled Ranger engine.

Spitfire Ultralight – built by Harry Harris of New Zealand, this is an all-composites job, and I think he’s on about doing either a kit or plans for it.

MJ10 – this one was built by Jerome Kramer, and again features a Ranger engine. Not sure whether it has flown recently.

That’s the Supermarine Mk26 prototype, which was sold to US agent Craig Muth earlier this year.

Richard W

Thanks for leaving a message in my guestbook! If you’re seriously interested in building an Isaacs (and there are a few of us around), then you should join the discussion group.

Rather a lot of these guys are doing MJ100s!

I’d love to see a formation of these mini Spits, though! The WAR Focke-Wulf crowd will be sh*tting themselves! 😀

God knows – I certainly shan’t be forwarding any money to it!

We are selling our project for £103,000, which represents the spend to date.”

ISTR that the kit costs about 40 grand.

Wonder what rate they are using to assess the ‘spend to date’ which presumably equates to the builder’s hours?

Moggy

This is from the e-mail I got from ST Aviation:

“Our Spitfire is almost completed firewall aft with all systems and avionics
installed and working. There are a few small jobs aft of the firewall.
Pictures on the web site show it rigged and painted.
Basically requires engine and cowlings and firwall forward fitting out.
The kit is complete except for engine, propeller and FWF parts such as
gascollator and fuel lines, the exhaust is on order.
PFA are ready to0 clear the design as soon as the first kit is presented and
this should be in the near future.

We are selling our project for £103,000, which represents the spend to date.”

Dunno, I think they’re just concentrating on their Jabiru range. They are offering their part-built Mk26 for sale. I think I have the price around here somewhere….

A couple more…

The Spitfire Mk26 – currently the only Spitfire available in kit form, produced in metal. Now imported into the UK by Matthew Russell Ltd.

What happened to ST Aviation?

Don’t have the PFA’s address to hand, but if you go to www.isaacsspitfire.4t.com, you’ll get it from there. Plans cost about £145, I think.

Nice pictures! The MJ100 is very nice looking, but I think that’s a bit too much…

The Isaacs is looking favourite. Where do you get the plans from?

A couple more…

The Spitfire Mk26 – currently the only Spitfire available in kit form, produced in metal. Now imported into the UK by Matthew Russell Ltd.

The Spitfire Mk25 – predecessor to the 26, and unfortunately no longer available. I happen to think the 25 looks better than its successor!

Loehle Spit Elite – another ultralight Spit, in wood this time. Prototype hasn’t flown yet, although fuselage kits are available at the moment, with promise of the wings later.

Time Warp Spitfire – roughly 60% scale Spitfire MkV, built of composites. Only one built before a MkIX version was created. This crashed, killing the designer, and thus Time Warp was wrapped up.

Tally Ho Spitfire Mk1 – reckoned by some to be the best-looking Spitfire replica out there. I’m not sure whether kits are currently available, but I know one guy who has just acquired a project.
