Audio From the Past – WWII Avro Lancaster Crew Radio

The professionalism, teamwork and courage are powerfully evident in this and an understandable sense of fear.
It brings back memories of something my Grandfather used to say – “There were extended periods of total boredom interspersed with short periods of utter terror.”
We have so much to be grateful for, and I thank God for those many thousands who fought in so many capacities for the freedoms that we enjoy today.

The recording is the famous one made by BBC war correspondent Wynford Vaughan-Thomas and BBC sound engineer Reg Pidsley. They flew to Berlin on a 207 Squadron Lancaster. This is a recent Radio 4 programme about the making of the recording.

Agreed WP, definitely the same audio as played on the IWM Halifax walk through. Seem to remember it was a shorter edit on a continuous loop.

I think there used to be similar audio hooked up to the IWMs Halifax cockpit when I used to walk through it as a kid.

What did they use to record back then ?, was it a wire recorder ?

Richard Dimbleby flew twenty missions with bomber command to make recordings for the BBC, this audio is from one of those during a raid on Berlin.

It really is quite something to hear the voices ,the accents ,the human touch.We see silent footage but hearing the voices and the hums of the engines in the background.I will listen later with headphones .Just wondering how this was recorded ,was it an onboard extra crew ?
