Aussie Lancs

Some years ago (appro 5) a large article about some Lancasters (comp) had been bueried in their crates in Australia and they had been found using Ground Radar. Has anyone heard of this and if so what happened ??? (or is it just another press wind up)

Poor ol’ Steve struck a big rock during his journey and had to deviate somewhat – he was last seen 37 miles down but heading for Northern Canada.

The WD40 used in the 40’s unfortunately isn’t quite as good as the stuff used today. After about 20 years, it becomes somewhat corrosive. As a result, the Beauforts are now little more than a fond memory.

Pips – have a look for the latest Aussie aero mag, called “The Latest Aussie Aero Mag.”

I think it has everything you are looking for.

Bringing a bit of sanity back to this discussion, here’s a question.

Why would a Lancaster fuselage EVER be in a crate?

If you’ve seen pictures of Lancs coming off the production line you will see that fueslages come in neat, bite-size sections.

Now if I was planning to transport a fuselage somewhere would I I go to the trouble of assembling these sections into a fuselage which will be quite big and heavy, then constructed a bloody massive crate to transport it in?

If so, it’s a wonder we won the war at all.

Wouldn’t it be a bit more sensible to crate-up the sections separately? There wasn’t the sophistication of materials handling equipment about in those days.

Any sign of the full squadron of Beauforts which were drenched in WD40 and sealed in a dehumidified underground bunker in Siberia ??? , and what about the inhibited , wrapped and parcelled Beaufighters in Australia – last time I heard was when Steve Young had started digging from this side of the world to bring them back !!!!:D

Bit of a nuisance going to work the other morning, actually. One of the Lanc’s wings got caught up in the framework of the Sydney Harbour Bridge whilst she was being towed to Bankstown for pre-flight checks.

Caused all sorts of problems with the traffic…

Moggy, correction, it appears we will have 6/12 of a squadron now as G-George will be removed from her new home to join the half squadron which will be flown over to Scampton (via the aid of some inflight refuelling modifications) for a remake of The Dam Busters. Richard Todd will rperise his role and the CG will make himlook like it was 1954 allover again.

Anybody care to beat that for utter tosh! 😉

I’ve heard that too Hawker.

I think we should all be very grateful that Red Bull are putting up so much money so that our Aussie cousins can see the unique spectacle of 5/12s of a complete squadron airborne simultaneously, though I’m a bit peeved about the plan to fit the aircraft with overall floodlights so that the sponsors colours can be seen on the planned nightime fly pasts. The flashing LED ads are a great idea though.

Any idea if we will see them over here? Legends perhaps?
