Wow that statement is very far from accurate
There are compelling arguements on both sides but absolutely none of the evidence provides an answer
The Australians have been very agressive in their claims over the yaers hence many websites taking claim and this has lead to everyone believing the ground fire theory.
However the men closest to the action ie Wop May, Brown and Mellerish say differnt.
Wop May was definitely paying attention as it was his life on the line.
Roy Brown was an experienced Flight Leader with kills to his credit.
He was very much experienced enough to be able to realize whether or not his actions resulted in a shoot down.
Brown made his claim and let the issue rest.
Once the troops on the ground realized who was shot down claims started coming from everywhere ….reading all the report claims one gets the impression that there was much glory seeking going on …everyone wanted to responsible.
There was more than one autopsy and both were botched in some ways
Brown went on with his life and rarely spoke of the incident. Afterall . in his mind he had killed the man and it was not something that he wished to discuss or glorify .
There will never be 100% clarification but to claim he was definitely killed by ground fire can only be made by someone that has hardly taken the time to study the event.

I’d like to think Roy Brown, but I suspect it was more likely the Aussies on the ground
