dark light

Aussie Pink Floyd.

The Australian Pink Floyd show played the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre last night. Absolutely awesome balls-on music and an incredible light show, complete with 30 ft inflatable pig and Kangaroo!!!:D

Aware that there are probably some Floyd fans on the forum. All I can say is, if you get the chance to go and see them, do it. Don’t let the fact that they are not the real thing put you off.It didn’t worry the 3-4000 Floyd fans ( of all ages) that were there last night !

One of the best gigs I’ve been to for a while.

Hi Darren,

Hows life up the “Blue Toon”

Totally agree about needing a standing area, me and a couple of the lads said the same thing during the gig, and don’t get me started on the beer prices ( £ 3.50 for a bottle of Budweiser) 😮 😮 .
Just goes to show though, these guys were playing the Lemon Tree a few years ago !!

It’s strange how different venues suit different bands. Was at the Lemon Tree a couple of weeks ago to see Stiff Little Fingers. ( For those who don’t know Aberdeen, the Lemon Tree is a small – 400ish absolute max capacity – venue, low roof, etc, etc. ) Great atmosphere to watch old punk bands and the like, but just wouldn’t work as well at an exhibition centre type venue.

Loose-Head – Agree cracking gig, shame about the venue though, a standing area was needed!!! The chairs were too small and cramped for the length of the gig. In saying that, it was great to see the proper visual show that went along with the music. The Music Hall was unfortunately too small.

Nice to see them play some different stuff – The Gunners Dream, Pigs, Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun, Nobody Home, On The Turning Away to name a few. Only wished they would play Echoes again, as they did in 2005.

If you like/love Pink Floyd – you won’t be disappointed with a TAPF gig.

well I was born after all my favorite bands had hit the down stream of their career, so I never really got the change to see any of them in their peak…

And I have to agree, that I wont expect that much on the Townsend/Daltrey pacth, after all the thing that made me like the who was the rythm-section of the band….but then again, its better than nothing:rolleyes:

As for Pink Floyd, I think the set-list in Live8 was pretty much drawn due the fact that Roger, despite still touring, hasent got his voice (that I belive never really was his main talent) sounding so that it would justify David to set back…and all the great Waters (Sheep, Pigs ect…) titles were just bit too long to fit in for the 25 min set…
But as for my own taste of the band, as I find myself really a rocker, I tend to find the female-backup singers and saxs somehow flawing the music, so I have drifted to Rogers camp, expecially towards Animals and Wall and the non-shine on songs in the Wish You were Here album, but also for the older and weirder stuff….
I think Syd’s stuf has atleast for my taste aged well (the mixing of my copy of Piper hasent:mad: ) and somehow, as its so tigthly tied to its own era, that I havent experienced myself, it lures me in some od way…

well As Im allready going to see (the real) Who and Jethro Tull in Helsinki This year (and those events have effectively bankrupted my economy allready:D 😀 ) Guess I need to pass them this time…

But I will be in with the spirit, as the real band tends to be too stubbourn to do anything any more:( 😡

I saw Jethro Tull a few years ago at Sheffield, they were never my favourite band during their ‘Period’ but Ian Andersons chat and performance was really fantastic, you will really enjoy their performance. I’m not prepared to shell out huge amounts to see half the Who though, I’ve checked it out ands it’s silly money, just like the Police, in fact all up and coming major concerts seem to require new mortgages to be able to see them and they can all get stuffed quite frankly, I’m quite happy to recall seeing Led Zep for nothing, no not a scam for free, Kev35, it was at their own instigation.

So, what of the original Pink Floyd, I’ve looked on their website and without saying much about it, I think that the rift between the rest of the band and Roger Waters is too strong for them to perform or record again.
It was noticeable at the Live 8 concert that, while Waters seemed to be genuinely enjoying himself, Gilmour and Wright in particular were exchanging glances, and the choice of songs seemed pretty biased towards the Gilmour/Wright camp.
Shame really, but on the other hand, apart from Comfortably Numb, I always hated Another Brick in The Wall, it was a piece of self indulgence on the part of Roger Waters and led to the split.
I was lucky enough to see the band on their first tour after the departure of Syd Barrett, a truly psychadelic experience, liquid light show, the lot, enhanced by the waves crashing under the ballroom at Portsmouth’s South Parade pier, before Ken Russell destroyed the place while making Tommy, sorry Ken, not your fault personally, I believe a spotlight overheated.
The next time I saw them was during the Echoes tour at Trent Poly, when I was threatened with expulsion for demanding to use the sports hall toilets, despite the fact that I was a member of the Trent students union.
I do find Syd Barretts quirky stuff hard to take now, I don’t think that his material has aged well, but at least he was indirectly responsible for one of the greatest songs ever written, Shine on you Crazy Diamond, who was really responsible for that, Gilmour or Waters.
I have always tried to reconcile myself with both camps, but tend to go towards the Gilmour/Wright side of things, sorry Roger, but it’s like Lennon/Mcartney, opposites seem to work, but as individuals, it’s not the same anymore. Having said that, I did like the Division Bell, some good stuff on that album.
Mind you, how can you knock someone who had a P-51, did Gilmour ever fly it himself.
There was a fantastic documentary made about the band on BBC2 several years ago, hopefully my tape has survived my house move.
Hopefully these Aussies will appear at our nearest venue, I would be quite interested in seeing them.

Hi Gollevainen,

I guess the closest gig to you this year would be the Sweden Rock Festival at Solvesborg, 6th June.

As for setlist, well it varies tour to tour, but they cover from The Piper at The Gates Of Dawn through to The Division Bell. There is a possibility that at a few of this years gigs they will play the whole of Wish You Were Here ( 30th anniversary and all that) as the first part of the show.

Last night’s show was 3 hrs long, so a lot of material gets covered.

I know why, go on say it anyway !!! 😀

GRRRR! 😀

I’m a sound engineer and occasional bass player for another reasonably well known Pink Floyd tribute (and probably the Aussies main competition!) I saw the Aussies a few years ago and I must say, they are very, very good. Personally I find them just a little too sterile, but that’s purely a personal opinion. If you’re a Floyd fan and want to see what is probably the closest re-creation of the originals, go see them. I doubt you’ll be disappointed!

wich songs did they play? More of the earlier space-rock or the concept album stuff from later parts of the 70’s??
