I am seeking advice on how best to remove an Auster J1 Autocrat (built 1946) fuel tank. It has started leaking and has to come out. Looking at it-it seems that the control colummns, complete instrument panel and all switches, dials, etc. have to be removed. What then-is it held in by straps and can it be manoevred out into the cockpit? Any advice welcome!

Auster fuel tank
Thanks David. I seem to remember the tank being removed a few years ago for pressure testing and mention of a ‘struggle’ to get it out! I have a feeling that the leak will be around the fuel tap at the base of the tank but haven’t seen the job yet.

From memory its held in with rods that go through the tank diagonally . It should come out of the cockpit door with some struggling.
