Auster Magnetos

Just after some help to try and source a way ahead for some magnetos for an Auster. Basically the type fitted to the aircraft are BJH SG4-5 and SG4-12.

They need modifying to incorporate larger, less toothed gear wheels as the original wheels teeth occasionally stripped. The problem is is that we are unsure where to send them for overhaul, where to get overhauled units from or even the spares to carry out the modification.

If anyone also knows where we could get hold of AP1374 Vol 2 Part 2 Chap 3 I would like to hear from you also.

Please could anyone out there point us in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Stewart.

I can possibly also help you. The heavier tooth halfspeed wheel is also prone to stripping its teeth and I have found the best thing is to scrape out any dust buildup in EACH tooth when doing the 100 hour check. Here in NZ a lot of us are still using the finetooth wheels without any problems (as long as you keep the teeth clean). I hold reasonable stocks of most AG4 spares.

As previous post states Tony Stairs is the go to man for BTH mags.

Tony Stairs is the magneto king: what he doesn’t know about mags isn’t worth knowing. We sent him the BTH mag from the AOP.9 we had at Yeovilton a while back and it came back looking like it had been made yesterday. Top job.

I would give International Aerospace at Cranfield a call, ask to speak to John Belamy or Colin Stapleton in the Electrical section on 01234 750661
If they can’t do them or have the books, they will know who does.
