A “new build” 5 Alpha by the looks of things, as opposed to a demobbed Auster V, so a relatively rare machine…

When I helped to deliver Tangomikes’s Proctor to Great Oakley a few years ago Auster V G-APAH was sitting in an open fronted hangar with a heavy layer of dust suggesting it hadn’t moved for a long time. According to GINFO it last had a C of A in 2004. It is possible that it is still sitting there so might be worth a look. The last owner shown on GINFO lived in Manningtree which isn’t too far from Great Oakley.

And it appears to turn the right way i.e. The same as the Gipsy/Cirrus engines…

The Lycoming fitted to Auster IV and V gets more difficult as the years go by to find parts for. The aim is for a 160 or 180 hp machine that will have good short field ability and spares off the shelf.
What about fitting a LOM engine as fitted to this chipmunk in NZ? : http://rnzaf.proboards.com/post/246440/thread
At least it’s in production and easier to find parts

I’ve always thought that the pun was a very weak form of humour.

I didn’t think anyone would teak offence at some harmless punnery that germinated from a spelling mistake?
By: Stan Smith - 24th January 2017 at 20:27
Sorry if I offended you. Such was not my intention,

I woodn’t fault him if he did.
I pine for the days when we could use this forum without a forest of puns

Hi Brat, question. If you have tree on board can you log the time??? (Sorry, couldn’t resist it)

Therefore an Auster that was built with a Lycoming is a far nicer option than converting a nice J.1N that is already airworthy and probably one of the best of the breed.

Trying to stop a very nice J.1N being converted to Lycoming. Hopefully it can be avoided !
I share that thought, but I guess better to have it flying with a Lycoming than not at all…

IIRC there is / was an ex French Auster Workmaster stored at the Wings Museum. It is G-OJAS which was once under rebuild at Shoreham.
