Can anyone identify the Taylorcraft Plus D and the two Auster Autocrats operated by Hastings & East Sussex Airways (?) at Pebsham Aerodrome in the early 1950s. Also can anyone detail any aircraft, other than Klemm 25 G-AAHW and Avro Prefect G-AHVO, which were resident at Pebsham between 1948 and 1960?

Thanks to Farnboroughrob, here’s a photo from September 1950 issue of ‘The Aeroplane’ showing the Klemm and an Auster – but I can’t work out which one – at Pebsham.

So no photos of G-AIZY or any of the other Austers or the Klemm 25 or the Avro Prefect at Pebsham? Ah well, one can always live in hope!

Herte is a colour photo taken at Ipswich – the black and white photo was taken at Sothend when it was owned by Southend Corporation.

Here’s a photo from the Auster Club magazine showing the demise of G-AIZY.

How very sad. I did my solo X -country in IZY from Ipswich-Cambridge-Luton-Ipswich in March 1965!

G-AIZY is currently at Eggesford being used as a source of spares for other restorations.

Having identified the Hastings’ Austers, can anyone shed light on other Pebsham residents in the period 1948-60?
So should I take that as a no?

I can think of some words to describe the Daimler SP250 but they wouldn’t be sports car! But enough of matters automotive. Having identified the Hastings’ Austers, can anyone shed light on other Pebsham residents in the period 1948-60?

That’s a good point actually though even when I was single I never had the urge to own a sporty car, note I didn’t say sports car as to my mind little things like the midget/sprite and MGB were not real sports cars that definition doesn’t apply until you move up to things like Astons, Daimler SP250s and the like.

Obviosly a man with a soft spot for Austers
………….and, perhaps, a growing family – start with a two seater (Plus D), move on to a more modern two seater (Arrow) and then buy a four seater (Autocar). It’s a bit like having a Sprite when you’re young and single; trading it in for an MGB to please the girlfriend who becomes the wife; and then part exchanging it for a Cortina when the kids come along! Anyhow here’s a photo of G-AHXE in her Shoreham days (photos of anything at Pebsham are rarer than hens’ teeth). Does anyone have any of G-AGYF and G-AIZY – or, for that matter, G-AJXZ or G-AJYV ?

G-AIZY
G-AIZY was not destroyed by fire at the time of the act of vandalism. Ihe wreckage was taken to Brunel College of Technology in Bristol. See my posts under the Channel Airways topic on this Forum.

G-AIZY
Ah well, if G-AIZY is “missing, presumed dead”, it’s good to know that G-AHXE is still in the south of England – even if the Pothecary’s have moved her on from Sussex to Wiltshire!
Alas poor G-AIZY is ‘missing, presumed dead’,the aircraft was destroyed by fire after being vandalised some years ago whilst parked out in a field.

A promising candidate for a Plus D at Pebsham would be G-AHXE which, although not owned by Hastings & East Sussex, might have been there for a few months in 1949 when owned by Hastings resident A.S. Mackenzie-Lowe who replaced the Plus D with J/2 Arrow G-AJXZ and later J/5B Autocar G-AJYV.
I hope this helps.

Avro, would you still like me to ask on the Auster Club site about the ID’s or any other info on them?
Ooh, that’s spooky – I was going to bump this thread when your post appeared. The answer is – yes, please. Any more information will be appreciated.

Thank you both for your contributions. I’m inclined to share the opinion concerning G-AHXE as the name of Alex McKenzie-Lowe has already come up as one of the pilots with Hastings & East Sussex Air Services (along with Johnny Wild, who was one of the partners in H&ESAS before it incorporated).

The Autocrats G-AGYF and G-AIZY were operated by Hastings & East Sussex Air Services during the period 1948-1951.
No +D was registered in that name but I will take another look in the morning to see if I can come up with any candidates.

If you don’t mind waiting a day or two until i’m back from holiday, I can ask on the Auster Club messageboard
