australia long quest for a bomber (1958-1974)

An interesting story is the long quest of australia for his Canberra replacement. I think it can make an insteresting topic…
At the beginning of the 60’s, Indonesia received Tu-16 badger from USSR. The bombers vwere perceived as a threat by Australia : with 5000km range, indonesia can bomb the north of australia! So the country started searching a plane to replace its canberra fleet.
First according to Joe Baugher were contacts with the USA concerning the B-58 hustler

the real story started in 1963 when the A5 and Mirage IV were tested by General Hancock. Interestingly, the Phantom F4C was also considered , with atar-9 engines (the same engine of the Mirage IIIO of the RAAF).
The vigilante was declared winner, but a tremendous fight occur between the brand new F-111 and TSR2 with the F-111 as winner. But the two bombers were not to enter service before 1968 so as a stopgap, England and USA proposed their equivalent to the Tu-16 : Vulcan and Stratojets!!
That’s made a strange list of airplanes

– B58 Hustler
– F4C with Atar-9
– A5 vigilante
– Mirage IV
– TSR2
– F-111
– B47
– Avro vulcan
what do you think about that story ?
