“Australia is to buy a squadron of 24 F-18F Super Hornet fighter aircraft in a surprise policy shift that will delay by a year the acquisition of the RAAF’s first squadron of advanced F 35 JSF aircraft.
The decision to acquire the Super Hornets, at a notional cost of $90 million each, follows increasing concerns over the safety of Australia’s ageing fleet of F-111 fighter bombers after 2010.
