Australian Local Archives.

This is perhaps an unusual request but I’m looking for people who might be able to access local libraries and archives in the Fremantle, Manly and Richmond areas, in particular, newspaper archives. Alternatively, if anyone could give me email addresses for libraries and archives in the above areas I would be most grateful if they could contact me off board.

It is in connection with RAAF personnel lost in World War Two but at the moment I would prefer to give details off board.

I know it’s a lot to ask but would be grateful for any help.

Regards,

Considering it’s to do with military personel I’d say it’s Richmond in Sydney 😉

Depends if it’s recruitment/service or hometown / address of next of kin, eh?

Kev, e- on its way.

Thanks Ja.

It is Richmond, Victoria and Manly in Sydney so I’ll send you a PM about the Manly information I need.

Thanks.

Hi Kev,
Well, I’m a bit further from Freo, WA than you are from Moscow, but I do have a couple of contacts in WA. I presume you are thinking of Manly near Sydney, NSW (not Queensland?) where I can’t help. And which ‘Richmond’ are you referring to? There’s six in Australia. I’m about a kilometre from the Vic. one.

Kev

I suppose you are

a) Aware of this

http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home

b) Can request (if not already digitized) for the personnel record to be made avialable online here:

http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch/index.aspx

Dunno if it costs or is free

Paul.

Thanks for that. I have the casualty and Service Records all in hand, they cost about £9 each have them digitised. I have the casualty papers already and am waiting for the Service Records to be digitised.

That newspaper link looks as though it could be very useful to me. A quick search for one item reveals that it is not yet available online but it is definitely a link for the future.

Thanks again.

Freo

Kev,
I’m Perth-based and might be able to assist, though I’m not sure what is stored at Fremantle unless you’re looking for Australian Army or Navy records. There is also the National Archives – Western Australia branch in Bentley/Victoria Park, which contains much of the military archival records of Australian Service Personnel.
If you’d like to pm me some very basic details, I can probably make a phone call or two for you and get back with some contact e-m addresses, etc.

Regards,
