Going to Oz for my hols this year, will be visiting Melbourne and Cairns, any recommendation for an aviation museum in those areas or one covering WW2 in the Northern territories, i have always had an interest in the war around Papua New Guinea and the Kokoda Track.

Sadly Sid Beck’s Museum has been closed for the past 3 years – according to posts on various Facebook pages. It appears that much of the armoured vehicle collection resides in the new Smithfield (northern Cairns suburb) Armour Museum. The aviation collection is reported to be scattered to various collections, though I don’t have any specific details to share. I’ve been in Cairns over the last week, and the Short Belfast is still on the General Aviation tarmac. I’ve posted a few recent photos on the Short Belfast thread.

If you are in Melbourne and fancy a driving tour (road trip) around the place, you could also drop in to Tyabb and check out some of the warbirds based down there. Probably wise to check on line and see if any specific events are planned for various weekends.

Happy holidays, …geoff

Hi Kartman

In Melbourne you have two museums on your must see list.

1. RAAF Museum Pt Cook: https://www.tripadvisor.com.au/Attraction_Review-g659928-d257183-Reviews-RAAF_Museum-Point_Cook_Greater_Melbourne_Victoria.html
2. Australian National Aviation Museum: http://www.aarg.com.au/the-museum.html

As mentioned above there is also a B24 at Laverton – which is between Melbourne and Pt. Cook

About two hours drive north of Melbourne you also have the Benalla Aviation Museum at Benalla Airfield – Home of the Gliding Club of Victoria. Benalla was home to No. 11 EFTS during WW2 under the Empire Air Training Scheme.

When will you be here Kartman?

Kind regards.

Paul

How are you travelling in between. Thinking flying as most British visitors would be put off by the distances but if not……Australian War Memorial in Canberra and Temora Aviation Museum in Temora, rural NSW

In the Cairns area, go to Sid Beck’s museum in Mareeba.

Melbourne: I would suggest the RAAF Museum at Point Cook, the Australian National Aviation Museum at Moorabbin, the B-24 at Werribee.

Also get to the B-24 at Werribee, west of Melbourne if you can.

Was in Oz from end of Nov 2017 until Jan 2018. Not sure about aircraft but there is a tank museum outside Cairns http://ausarmour.com/

You have the RAAF museum and Australian National Aviation museum in Melbourne, though these were two that I missed while I was out there even though I was in Melbourne for a week.

Also recommend if you can get to Brisbane taking the trip up to the Queensland Air Museum.

As to the Belfast this was it state in Dec 2017.

Enjoy your hols, kartman, and I for one would love an update on the Shorts Belfast at Cairns – and if there is any progress with her potential return to flight.
Thanks in advance.
