were the problems because Kockums didnt have experience in designing such large submarines before…ie they were also learning and making up the rules as they went along ? I read that problem consultancy was done with USN not kockums.

I thought the Collins Class had done very well against USN Carrier Battle Groups during RIMPAC Exerecises?

Here is a Government report on the problems with the class from 1999.

While this report from last year discusses the $A857million upgrade/rectification program

Well there were more noise problems than just that one, let see how good my memory is!
———————————————————————————-
The Seven balded prop used to cause cavitation noise if it went above 7kts
The Periscope rattled when trying to use it at PD
The Engines made a huge amount of noise due to the fact that the Rubber stoppers that they rested on either were never put in or had deteriorated due to the amount of vibration the engines produced
Finally the computers made a rather loude hum for some strange reason
———————————————————————————-
Of all these problems (including the water flow as mentioned above), only the computer noise is yet to be fixed. The RAN has announced that with the new ADCAP torps will come a new computer system and this will be noise tested before installation.

Just curious, what was the cause of the noise problem in the Collins subs?
Mostly flow noise IIRC. One of the fixes was the addition of a fillet on the forward edge of the sail to smooth out the transition from hull to sail. The combat system was the main problem though rather than the noise considerations.

No they don’t, originally they were to get them, but the probelms chewed up the upgrade money so as a result we won’t get the VLS nor the TLAMS

VLS?
Did/does the collins class have VL tubes? Havent seen any site mention them.
But these pics:

From the top view it looks like there are 12 tubes. And in pic 2 is that an open vertical tube door at the front end of the sub or is that just the dome on the bow of the collins?
BTW what is that dome for anyways? active intercept?

Well if you want an honest oppinion from someone who served aboard one of them I’ll be happy to tell you what I know.
Most of the teething problems have now been sorted out, HMAS Collins is due to re-enter the fleet soon after having been handed back to ASC for fixing of the main problems (from the third boat on these probems were taken in hand on the production line- these being called “Fast Track” subs- only the first two, Collins and Farncombe experienced the infoamous problems). AIP and TLAM tubes have been given away but we are adding ADCAP to the class, this should make them a lot more potent in the region.
Apart from that, the class is coming along, finally. The other major intergration is going well as well- that of placing women on board subs (I knew the first woman to be accepted for Sub duty, it’s all she had wanted to do).
As for a battle between China and Australia, I would have to favour the home ground as we have the better boats now, especially after the upgrades

Good enough that they have taken up the mantle of the Oberon class that the RAN operated for so many years.
They have “sunk” high value targets in exercises such as RIMPAC (US CVN’s amongst others), have conducted the same intelligence gathering ops that the Oberon class used to undertake and have given the nuclear attack subs of the RN and USN a very hard time when they have met in exercises.
Given that both of those navies are the varsity of SSN ops, the RAN is reasonably happy with where the Collins class are right now.
They will be better when a range of upgrades and improvements currently planned are completed.

Ah te formidable Romeo! The US should still be using the GUPPYs and the Brits the T-Class conversions!

They are good, but as it is a fashion online lately, I will say that the chinese songs and romeos will sink them in seconds.
That is to make chinese happy and boast their national pride. As it seems that the reality dosn’t fit them and they bash you when you don’t agree (calling you racist and all…).
Have fun!
