I’d completely forgotten them. They were a short-lived marque in their own right, bought out in the early 60s by DMW – who didn’t last a lot longer themselves.

Also the Ambassador motorcycle. Not sure now who built them – Aerial possibly?

It appears it’s true you learn something everyday – I never knew that.

All I really remember is a triangularish crankcase and a cylinder angled so far forwards it looked like half a V twin.

More obscure British bikes:

Francis-Barnett Snipe, Falcon and Fulmar.

I’m not surprised by that, they were pretty rare beasts when I first heard of them back in the late 60s, something about rocking horse droppings comes to mind. Quite a way ahead of the competition of the time too. Single inlet and twin exhaust valves.

Sadly, yes I am old enough to remember Panther motorcycles, although I haven’t seen one in 40 years or so.

Cadet has already been mentioned. I think that was a James m/c too.

Ah yes, now it all comes back to me. As far as I can remember the FFARs were Mighty Mouse. I would have thought there would have been a drag penalty after firing the rockets, there certainly is with the Matra multi barrel packs.
Just had another one come to mind for the list.
Panther – Grumman/Phelon & Moore Motorcycles (anyone remember them?)

Another question came to mind when I was supposedly working the other day. Was the F-94 the one with the battery of FFARs behind trap doors in the nose cone? I think something like 6 or 8 of them.

Yes, on the F-94C (the A and B variants had guns).

Also, there were pods built into the leading edge of the wings. Their aerodynamic covers were frangible and the FFARs went through them. I always wondered if (after the attack) the remaining surface would be drag-inducing…but I don’t have a manual to see if that’s addressed.

As you suspected, the Renault was Dauphine.

Not too bad if you wanted to go in a straight line very slowly, anything else, forget it. 🙂

Agreed, though it has to be said that the Floride (2+2 cabriot built on the same running gear) was a fun little machine – I know, I used to own one.
Hurrifan – There is a VW caravelle again. A camper built on the Tranporter chassis/body.
As for the Daphine Gordini – **** I still don’t reckon it was a patch on the Floride

Yes? too young to remember them…just !:D

thanks for the link..damned usefull !

Plenty old enough to remember Standard Vanguards.

I can type Rover Cortina and say I had one. It doesn’t prove it existed.

The Ebay link is also a Standard Vanguard, whatever the seller wants to call it.

Car model names are fiercely protected by manufacturers. Daimler had to change the name of the Dart because Dodge (?) complained, Ford tried to stop Tim Dutton selling his Sierra kits, (and failed because the Dutton came first), Jaguar asked Armstrong-Siddeley for permission before using the SS-Jaguar name.

Since there definitely was a Standard Vanguard, 3 different models over a period of around 14 years, I’m pretty certain there was never a Vauxhall with the same name.

Type “Vauxhall Vanguard” into Google you get 49 results. “Standard Vanguard” gives 18,600, which for a car that went out of production comfortably over 40 years ago is impressive.

I’m now confident in stating there was no such thing as a Vauxhall Vanguard.

Possibly cheating…

The original name for the Morris Minor was the Mosquito. 🙂

bet the wheels didnt suddenly go off at an angle by themselves on the DH version…

or the carbs didnt need some 3in1 oil to keep them working!!

did my first bit of driving in a dove grey minor round the back garden…

God rest you LGA 26E !!

Nice try. However, that’s a Standard Vanguard Phase 1.
