I’m trying to find some decent aviation related bookshops in the UK – preferably within 1 hour – 1.5 hours travelling time from Banbury. (I’d include London and Birmingham in this).
Are there any that you guys can recommend ?

If I had read this a month ago Andrew I would have suggested meeting up if possible as I am only a couple of miles away and a regular visitor, so I know only too well how bad it can be for the wallet!
Mind you its not as bad as it used to be as I used to work right opposite their last premises.

Thanks for that Steve.
I’ll give them a go the next time I’m down in London. I’d agree about Foyles – they certainly have a good selection

If you are going to visit Motor Books, don’t forget to check two other bookshops in Charing Cross Road FIRST. Henry Pordes and Lovejoys always have “remaindered” stocks of aviation titles which usually go for between one third and a half the list price! Their stock does vary though, sometimes it is amazing and others not so good.
Don’t foget Foyle’s either. Since they reorganised themselves their aviation section is now pretty good.

Interested to hear that, Andrew.
I’ve been meaning to go for years, especially when they’ve got one of their special offer weekends on or a second-hand day. No excuses really, it’s under an hour from here.

Just been up to the Midland Counties site near Hinckley. Very impressive (but bad for the wallet).
The range of books and videos is very impressive.
Melv – they’ve even got your Hurricane book in there !
Well worth a visit if you’re passing

There’s always the Ian Allan Bookshop within BHX viewing area in the main terminal, also the shop within East Mids Airport.

Yes sorry about that i was looking along the lines of the B o B film, the Leonard Mosely book is very good with lots of nice photos and others may have wanted to look into buying them as well.
I was going to alter my post but we lost the forum for a few days so was unable to clarify the post.

Thanks Mike J for the tip!
MikeJ , thanks for the information on The Rudhall Book, I do have the paperback issues already. Guess its a rare publication and sadly the author has passed away. Mr Rudhall wrote me a very nice email before he passed away and told me all the copies had been sold out. This is one publication that needs to find a new publisher and get a second printing indeed, now with the movie out on DVD . Thanks for the tip and information Mike !

Thanks for that guys.
I’ll give Midland Counties a go this week and will let you know how I get on.

I have been searching for the Robert Rudhall book on the making of the Battle of Britain and found this title under his name for a few bucks…over $900 to be exact. Looks like his works have gone up in price and I have not been able to locate a copy anywhere. I bought one at Hendon several years ago but it was damaged & water logged when a hot water heater went KBOOM on me ! I do beleive its out of print and hope to find another copy out there somewhere! Any tips on where to search would be welcomed !
Thanks!

Robert Humm in Stamford’s quite good, in fact I’ll be in there in about 10 hours.
Next to the railway station.
Doesn’t compare to Motorbooks, I can’t afford to go in there. 🙁

For secondhand online, try www.abebooks.com – unbeatable.
The Aviation Bookshop (Tonbridge Wells) and Motorbooks on St Martin’s Lane, London, are also excellent. Some museums make a big effort to stock a good range. The RAF Museum and IWM Duxford are not two of them.
Of course, I tend to get most of my books at airshows, so not at this time of year, here!
Cheers (ex-bookeller)

Midland Counties are pretty good.
I’ve been over to their last couple of aviation sale days when these have been advertised in Flypast. I think they are generally mail order and not sure whether they are open to the public on normal days. Someone here will probably confirm.
They also do transport/railway stuff also if that is of interest to you.
Regards,
Paul

Motor Books in Oxford is OK, but they seem to have more books on trains and cars than aviation.

The Falconwood Bookshop is my favourite, and very local to me. It’s a second-hand bookshop covering transport (cars/bus/trains/ships/motorbikes) and military (army/navy/airforce/commercial), though some of the books they have are in brand-new condition. They also have a great selection of back issue mags, FlyPast, Aeroplane Monthly, Airfix etc. etc.
Only drawback is that it’s only open Thur, Fri & Sat. See their add in the classified section of FlyPast for more info.
I’d also reccomend Motor Books, see their website here http://www.motorbooks.co.uk/
You can also try the Ian Allan on-line bookshop etc. They also handle the Midland Counties on-line sales. http://www.ianallansuperstore.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi
