Hi,
There used to be Discovery Wings on cable, it became Discovery Turbo which whilst supposed to be a third aviation , is not, not even 5% it seems. Is there an aviation channel I can pester Virgin Broadband to get for us Warbird followers, or has the world of TV decided that one of the biggest spectator interests in the UK, let alone the armchair aviation followers and modellers, do not justify aviation progs anymore ? Given some of the dribble they justify a channel worthy of, one would hope aviation would be considered.
If not a cable channel is there a satellite channel to be had, perhaps I shall have to ditch cable and go dish.

Is it just me, or have a large number of aviation documentaries (any other type documentary too) been dumbed down considerably?
:
Some of them are shockers in terms of quality, and they make me question the others as well, if I know little (for example) about the Romans, how many inaccuracies are in these?
I did, and still do, enjoy “Dogfights” when they show it, other than a massive US bias in subject material, it was very enjoyable. Its all about the time spent in preparation (also money…) I’ve watched all of the “Timewatch” series which featured the WW1 “aces falling” an enjoyed every one. A lot ogf the time, I get 2 mins into “greatest war planes” and I want to throw things at the TV !

I can hardly watch them anymore. correction – i can’t watch them anymore.
I get the feeling that most of these programs are made simply to sell TV advertisement aimed at people, who are too dumb to move away from the telly. And its not just about making aviation programs that appeal to a broader base of technical geeks. I can’t remember when I last saw an aviation documentary, that I would recommend to anyone.
Don’t get me started on discovery….. 😮

You are correct, that is exactly what has happened, we can’t get any channels interested in any of our aviation shows. Even Discovery are not interested in aviation any more.
Don’t know if it was a slow news weekend but both BBC South Today and Meridian News have been full of the soon-to-be-auctioned 2 seater Spitfire, even though the only connection with this area that I am aware of is that the rebuild (almost 100% I gather) was carried out at Thruxton.

Disocvery wings was Ok, but a few hours a day only with repeat material (as per loads of sky channels !)
I find now that there are more “history/documentary” channels with Sky and the aviation shows are spread across them. Some worth a look (IMO) like “Dogfights” which shows/repeats on History channel and Military channel. Lots of “great aircraft” shows which vary in quality, you know the kind of things, inane talk over interesting footage and the two not quite in sync (“US Navy lead the way” talk while you see a Baracuda) and (this had may waving my arms around) the Japanese copied US navy training techniques in planning Pearl Harbour – no mention of Taranto or the Royal Navy influence on the Japanese navy from rank badges onwards !
I’d suggest you grab a TV guide and scan the channels, you’ll see quite a mix across National Geographic, Discovery, “yesterday” etc etc – I do find them useful with to watch with my son (he is 9) to help him build his interest.
