Aviation goodies

a year or so back I visited Cosford after speaking to a friend who helped with something up there he told me there was an engine for a super sonic harrier that had been tested and then stored inside one of those remote hangers. WHen I actually visited I asked one of the guides about it and he was quite a taken aback when I mentioned it ,and finally admitted there was such a thing but how did I know about it. My question is , was he winding me up ? and if there was an engine as such why was it never used and where is it now as the guide told me it had been moved to a facility nearby but wouldnt tell me where. Also my friend told me after having a nose around those hangers that there was a goldmine of aviation goodies just stored there including what to him looked like a complete Phantom in bits still in its wrappings. Now my friend is not an aviation fan at all his expertise is computers so I dont feel he was talking B*****ks but you never know?

The rig that was used to test the BS.100 in now on display at the Bristol Aero Collection at Kemble – unfortunately without the BS.100. It is based on ex-RAF Harrier GR.1 XV798. The Plenium Chamber Burning (PCB) rig was tested at Patchway in 1964. Wouldn’t it be great to re-unite a BS.100 with the Harrier???

cheers,
Andy A.

There is a great deal stored in hangars around Cosford including, from memory, a Vickers Valetta, an American jet fighter gifted to the museum from a European air force, and a collection of 1930’s training monoplanes, amongst other bits and pieces.

I’m sure I heard a rumour that the remains of a 1930s bomber lay in the woods around Cosford, but I may be way wide of the mark here
