It is with deep regret that I announce the passing of aviation historian Ray Stutivant in hospital yesterday following a short illness.

He will be sadly missed.

I would like to add my condolences.

A superb author who on many occasions, brought clarity to otherwise difficult research subjects. His contribution and reference works should not be underestimated.

A sad, sudden and shocking bit of news.

This is very sad news to everyone who knew him, and who enjoyed his unselfish assistance.
I think it is hard to appreciate how bad it is for British aviation history research and writing.

Sad news indeed. Ray was always willing to help fellow researchers/historians/writers and, indeed, enthusiasts. The quality of his work was superb and his depth of knowledge on FAA related topics is irreplaceable.

Very sad news indeed for the aviation historical research community. Ray was responsible for some very fine books which are now standard reference works on RAF and FAA history. He will be greatly missed.

Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Ray Sturtivant, I.S.O.

So sorry to hear of Ray’s passing.

He always found time in his busy schedule to reply to my correspondence and share his vast knowledge unselfishly when I sought advice and assistance. His legacy lives on on many bookshelves.

Condolences to his family on this sad news.

Another legendary aviation author to pass away recently, and another major influence on my aviation interest through his wonderful books and articles.
God rest, and condolences to the family

Very sad. Just by seeing his name on the cover of a book one could tell so much about the quality and depth of the contents. He will be missed.

Sorry to hear that. His Fleet Air arm books are superb and “The History of Britain’s Military Training Aircraft”. He wrote some fine articles in Aviation News on serial/code letters which are still a boon in research today.

Ray

Ray will be sorely missed indeed by many – especially us enthusiasts who have benefitted from his ground-breaking, wide ranging, meticulous, detailed researches into British military aviation, and his generosity with the results. Until recently he could be seen once a week at Kew with his co-editor/authors, Jim Halley and Gordon Page; condolences to them and of course his family.

That’s a real shame – he has done some fine work, I have some of his publications I can see from here.
