Aviation photography sub forum

Honestly I would enjoy a photography forum. I always find myself in the A.net and dpreview.com photography forums, just as an observer, and I think it would be good to discuss the topic here. I am at the odd point right now where I do not have access to a SLR but I am doing all the research and study I can before I can gain more knowledge from hands-on experience.

The only thing that needs to be looked at is the sheer demand for the sub-forum. Is there enough demand for it at present time? But, one could argue that starting the forum would promote more discussion. I would be for it. But, maybe a vote should be taken across the entire Key forums. Any other ideas or opinions?

Just a side note, as Flood said we also might want to consider what to do considering Kev35’s step down.

Nope – to me things like Legends (which has just caused a big disturbance on historic) need to be there with all the other bits and pieces that make up historic.
It is possibly the odd picture, the ‘I shot this over the fence at so-and-so’, that might need to be here. Things like a new colour scheme or the ‘whats this aircraft/marking/registration’, these should be on the respective forum. It is the ‘I took this today, what do you think?’ or ‘how do I stop from getting silhouettes when shooting into the sun?’ as well as that old favourite about getting a picture of a flying Spitfire with the engine actually running for once…;)
I can appreciate an image of an aeroplane, be it an airliner, a modern strike fighter, or an historic biplane: maybe it is just the actual beauty of the ‘planes lines or the mastery of the photographer that needs to be shown off?

But I am open to other minds, other ideas. (I will crush them, of course, but I am open…;))

See what you mean, Flood, it just depends on how wide the net of a dedicated Photo Forum should be spread, then.
I still, despite your comments, believe that the answers to frequently asked questions such as basic camera techniques should be in the FAQs, you can’t spoon-feed Forum members so much as to believe they will never find the way to the FAQs, surely?
I would hope however that the presence of such a Photo Forum would not prohibit occasional photos relevant to a particular thread appearing in the various other Forums . . .

Surely, Flood, that info should be in the FAQs, which is where I always look first if I have a question! Otherwise there could be a “permanent” Hints and Tips section, available for posting by the general public, but heavily and strictly moderated to keep it as small as possible and not littered with posts that stray off the subject (e.g. rude comments and flames, that abound elsewhere!).

Some people do look in the FAQs, but then some people believe that all the forums here are part of the Air Forces Monthly magazine without realising that there are at least three other mags involved… There is also a case for working on the weakest link in the chain, and some of those weak links never move from their respective forum (and some are just new and don’t know the ropes, of course): but it is these members who ask how to post pictures on a fairly regular basis.
At this time of year there are a lot of new cameras being bought and tested – have a look on historic and commercial at the number of requests for suitable cameras and questions about how to change shutter speeds: show me where this falls into either the commercial or historic theme?
There are more than enough people around here who earn a living as photographers, and there are some excellent amateur photographers (and I must hasten to add that I mean amateur from the point of view that they do not get paid for their camera work) who are usually only to happy to pass on tips and help if needed or asked.
Maybe those who enjoy seaching for info on the net can find reviews of new cameras and post them here to give others an idea of what is available, with others casting an expert eye over the detail and imparting an opinion on whether the camera concerned would be useful for moving or static shots only. Lenses could be a sore point for those who were mislead by enthusiastic salesmen – digital zoom is something lots of potential buyers need to be aware of; many will be expecting Robbo-style results from a £129.99 1.1 megapixel bargain offer. Share the wealth, I say.
Why not give information on the best places to shoot at certain airfields – subject to security? Maybe this would extend into a heads-up as to the arrival or appearence of a certain aircraft at an airport?

I asked webbie today if we can have one of these as I know there’s lot’s of interest. I’m not a huge fan of the sub divided forums of late, but if there’s one that’s lacking then surely this is it ?

I know some of you guys have been suggesting the same, so if you still think it’s a good idea then let’s hear about it ? 😉

I am fine with it, I even might enjoy such a sub-forum 😀 . But I ask you to get ride of a sub-forum first. Webbie promised no more forums 😎 .

I must add that I am in no way saying that things like Legends should be separate from the hysteric forum, just that how many times do you see questions posted asking how to do this, that, and everything, basically!
We should have something here on how to post images on the forum, how to use digital cameras, digital zoom hints and tips (ie don’t!), how to take pix with blurred props, control of backlighting and use of exposure compensation, that sort of thing. Snappers Photoshop mono-colouring master class would be an ideal inclusion!

I prefer the mix of text and pictures myself, but I suppose I am one of the lucky few(?) with broadband. I personally therefore would vote against the inclusion of a photo sub forum.

Whilst on the subject of photos/images… Maybe you’d like to enquire what the legal right to post remark means: on historic the pix are either taken by the individuals concerned or are old; on modern military they are generally company PR pix; but on commercial they seem to float in from Airliners.net which, it would seem to me, might raise copyright problems. Something we could discuss on a photo forum?;)

Any idea who steps into Kevs sadly vacated shoes?:(
