Gentlemen,
welcome to my very first avaition pioneer quiz. Just name the plane and / or its designer. Hint: It´s not a Blériot design … :diablo:

I was going to guess a Fastenrath monoplane circa 1911 but I was afraid everyone would laugh at me. LOL
By: ...starfire - 29th December 2004 at 19:14
The guy to the left is my great-granfather Ernst Fastenrath. He constructed and built the plane and also the engine on his own from 1911 to 1913. He flew occasionally near Plettenberg (some 25km south-east of Dortmund), always trying to improve the (ever nameless) airplane. In the end, he upgraded the engine from 3 to 4 cylinder, but crashed the plane soon afterwards. The wings were sold to a friend, who built a new fuselage and continued flying until the outbreak of WWI. The 4-cyl.-engine survived until today and is currently “on loan” as an exhibit to the local flying club.
At the beginning of WWI, my great-grandfather joined the army and ended up due to his experiences in aviation as a airplane-mechanic. During the first stage of the war, he was later tranferred to twin-engined bombers, his work was maintaining the plane of the crew Schroeder (Pilot) / von Richthofen (“Franzer” = Navigator / Observer).
I knew you´d fail … you never had any chance. :p

Okay, if no one has another clue, I´ll solve in 15 minutes.
Ups. Colonel, you´re wrong.
By: crazymainer - 28th December 2004 at 23:10
Ok then,
It appears to be a Bruno Scholz design Mono-Plane which is based on one of Fokkers earlier mid-wing Mono-planes.
I beleive Lothard married Brunos Sister.

By: DazDaMan - 28th December 2004 at 13:55
Well, as I don’t recall his brother ever having a moustache, I’m going to rule out the obvious…!
By: ...starfire - 28th December 2004 at 13:54
Yes, it´s a German aviator, but not Etrich.
But everything else is wrong. :diablo:
Next hint: He´s got a connection to Lothar von Richthofen.
By: crazymainer - 28th December 2004 at 13:46
Ok Then,
After rechecking the photo and looking at the wing it appears to be one of the many Etrich designs notice how the wing tappers back like a birds wing, this is a Etrich trait. If I was going to guess I would say one of the very first Etrich Monoplanes the engine is a Five Cylinder La Rhome the stander engine for that time period.
I would guess to say one of the gentlemen is Igo Etrich.

Both wrong. It never appeared on screen and the two gentlemen aren´t Frenchmen. The picture dates from 1912.
By: crazymainer - 28th December 2004 at 13:10
Hi,
It appears to be a Nieuport Monoplane and if so the two Gentlemen are Charles and Edourd de Nieuport.

May I ask for just one clue Chris, Is the pilot seating in this aircraft under the wing behind the wheels.
New Year Cheer’s to all, Tally Ho! Phil.

Good morning,
the answer is: Wrong. Well, maybe it was inspired by Fokker, I´m not sure which one was built earlier.
By: Andy in Beds - 27th December 2004 at 22:30
I tend to agree with Daz.
A Fokker Spin or maybe an early Dep.
Cheers
Andy
