Aviation quotes and soundbites

Aviation isn’t perhaps known for its quotes and soundbites, but there are a couple that usually send a tingle up my spine. The first is the famous Herb Morrison live commentary when the Hindenburg burst into flames in New Jersey in 1937. I’d defy anyone with a soul to be unmoved by it. Compare that with the cold, sterile live commentary on the Challenger disaster in 1986, which if memory serves went something along the lines of “Uh… we, uh… we appear to have a, uh… major malfunction. Uh… stand by
The other soundbite that gives me goosebumps is from the 1962 launch of NASA’s Friendship 7 mission in 1962, and those simple but heartfelt words “God speed, John Glenn” Somewhat ironically perhaps, Glenn didn’t hear them at the time.
