Aviation section at Science Museum, London

Inspired by JDK’s recent description of the historic aircaft on display at the Science Museum in South Kensington, I nipped down there this afternoon (hope I don’t start wearing tweed soon).

General photo, prototype Harrier, an example of Steve Patterson’s next purchase and two photos of the beautiful Vimy.

Robbo
many thanks for posting.
I think the science museum beckons me too.
I see the original Antoinette has a liquid cooled V8.

50hp Antionette. A beautiful engine. (looks rather than performance!)

The Mag Men replica looks like it could be Cirrus/Hermes powered??

DH Gypsy 1

I also like the Avro triplane–1909 variety.
Many thanks to you and Andrew.
Best
Andy 🙂 🙂 🙂

Actually, I’d better not go – first chance I’d get I’d have that Spitfire down off the ceiling! 😉

Worth a visit, thanks for sharing Andrew O!

I wandered around with a tripod (in all ignorance guv) a while back, no problem. I did ask a hastled guy on the door too, and he said yes because of how I framed the question! Try your luck Robbo!

My current tripod, all 4in of it is quite OK.

Don’t miss the Avro 504, Short SC-1, Flying Bedstead and Lockheed 10a all in the 20th Cent galleries downstairs.

The flight gallery is correctly entitled ‘The National Aeronautical Collection’ which also includes the collection of a/c at Wroughton, Wilts*.

It is, unarguably, the most important collection of original historic (and in many cases unrestored) aircraft in Britain; more record holders in once place than anywhere else.

Plus the engines, fascinating in themselves! Pity it’s in semi darkness, though on the other hand ALL the a/c are easier to see from different angles than many are in Milestones at Hendon.

Cheers

*This means Wiltshire – for Steve P!

The Spit was the one on the big Plaistow Spitfire poster – I think I have that somewhere!

Thanks for that guys.

Dave, I think the Camel is at the IWM in Lambeth. Certainly not at the Science Museum. And, yes you can be there for hours when you start exploring the other halls.

I think what impressed me was the rarity of the exhibits. The Spit and Hurri are both Battle of Britain aircraft, the Vimy is the original that flew the Atlantic, Amy Johnson’s biplane which she flew solo England-Australia etc.etc.

Until JDK reminded me at Shuttleworth recently, I’d forgotten how important this collection is.

Thanks for the excellent photos Andrew, I had forgotten what a fantastic museum that place is. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit there in 1996, and I was pleasantly surprised when i came across the aviation hall as I hadn’t realised till then they had all these lovely (and mostly rare) aircraft. The rest of the museum is fascinating too, and I loved all the scale models from farm tractors to Nelson’s death scene.

Didn’t they also have a Sopwith Camel or Pup there too somewhere? Or am I confusing this place with the IWM in Lambeth?

Well Done.

Good ones Andrew.
I haven’t been there for years but looking at your pictures I think it’s about time I made another visit.
