I dare say, many of us have aviation related trench art. One piece I bought a few years ago comprised of what I thought was a blue annodised Mustang (razorback) on top of a WW2 Luftwaffe incendiary bomb – a very impressive ashtray. Any way, I managed to drop it (well, knock it off a shelf with a duvet – don’t ask!). And to my surprise, the top fell off – revealing a lighter made of a cannon case. At first I thought it might be a Hispano 20mm round – anyway it is beautifully chromed and dated 1944. It is a pretty cool item
Has anyone got any they would like to share.

Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp.
Sorry, didn’t see your post about my Kestrel rods; I’ll have to think about it.
Thank you for the P&W ID.
Kestrel rod experiments are part of this thread on Gilman bearings :

Latest is to stay entirely away from berryllium copper, highly, highly toxic !
But enough information has now been gathered to try and rediscover the lost process of centrifugally cast copper lead bearings…

Not sure about the piston, looks like two valve cylinder with valves coming in at an angle…

Here’s a little something I picked up for a Tenner in a local Charity shop.
(Fortunately, they had resisted the urge to polish out the patina.)
No prop; but the spinner is a wartime period Hammer-drive screw.

8 1/2 pound practice bomb RAAF 1930’s
Has anyone got any they would like to share.[/QUOTE]
If Liberace was into trenchart then this is the piece he would have on his piano !
Got this for the 8 1/2 pound practice bomb which was used in the 1930’s, in RAAF on Bristol Bulldogs and Hawker Demons.
Not sure about the piston, looks like two valve cylinder with valves coming in at an angle….
Does anybody have any information on 8 1/2 pound practice bombs and how they worked. I understand these were dropped and created a burst of coloured smoke on impact.

Lab rabbits required
Not really sure if this counts as ‘trench art’ but it is definitely aviation related.
Any guesses as to what it is made from?
CD,
Would you part with the Kestrel conrods to allow them to participate in trials of cast in copper berryllium bearing material ? Bit like sending pet rabbits into the lab, they may come back changed or not breathing….

Nice one Ian ! – Baltimore Brass Company IIRC – same as the drum full we pulled out from a P-39 a few years ago 🙂

Some nice items. Not my usual area but I couldn’t resist this shiny pair in a local antique shop. US 20mm.

What about Kestrel?
Bingo! 🙂 They are a pair of Rolls-Royce Kestrel rods.
Actually they are not in as good condition as they look; they’ve obviously got very damp at some point as the back (and to a lesser extent the front) of them is heavily pitted with rust. They are proper ‘trench art’ crude though; the wooden base was very rough and although the rods have had some sort of lacquer painted over them it was done right over all the oil left under the big-end bearings (as I found-out when I dismantled them)!

Definitely from an aero-engine (but with a automotive connection)…
…not Tiger Moth…..not many ‘V’-configured engine Tiger Moths about? 🙂
Hispano-Suiza?

They look a bit like car piston arms. If not I would guess at Tiger Moth?

very nice indeed!

This was made by my grandfathers brother in New Guinea during 1943-44. Constructed of various 50 cal and 303 rounds/cases.
