Aviodrome

Hi

I am thinking of going to Amsterdam for a few days next month and was hoping of maybe trying to get to the Aviodrome at Lelystad. What is the best way to get there from Amsterdam. Train and bus? Does a bus stop close to the site?

Thanks

Say hello to our Old Beech 18 G-BKRG when you’re there….we sold it to the Aviodome a couple of years ago and it has been completely refurbished…..

If I recall correctly, there was a taxi-phone at the station, near the bus stop. You just call the local firm, and they dispatch. At times, I’m sure they have a few waiting at the rank. For the journey back, you’ll have taken the taxi firm’s business card, won’t you? 😉

Oh, and I have no Dutch, but everybody was happy to converse in English.

A visit to Soesterberg is a definite taxi ride from the nearest station, rather than a bus. However I found the Amsterdam tourist information very helpful, despite not having heard of either museum (but the Aviodrome was new, then, to be fair.)

Thanks for the replies!

JDK – I like the idea of getting a taxi from the train station better than the bus. In Barcelona a few years ago I tried to get to Nou Camp stadium by bus and ended up miles away! 😮

Are there taxis at the train station, or did you have to order one by phone? How do I find out the phone number of a suitable taxi service?

Visited Aviodrome in May, took the train to Lelystad and then the regular bus service. Well worth a visit. I do regret that I didn’t fly with the Cat, though!

If you’re into vintage stuff I would really recommend a combined visit to the Early Birds Foundation. Their hangar is just further down the airfield. Very impressive originals and replicas from the early days. http://www.vroegevogels.org/

Hi Ross,
I went in December 2003. I took a train from Amsterdam to Lelystad station, and then ordered a taxi, which was (IIRC) very reasonable. There is a bus service, but it was infrequent during the day when I was travelling – can’t recall if it was a weekday or weekend.

I then ordered a taxi at the Aviodrome to return to the station. There’s also an embarrassing/creditable story: I also forgot my gloves in the first taxi. I phone’d the depot, and the first driver got them to the taxi that picked me up via the depot – at no extra charge, which was VERY impressive. (I left a tip…)

I’d also hightly recommend a visit to the Dutch Military Aviation Museum at Soesterberg. As a pair the two museums are stunning, either is great in terms of the range of the types.

I didn’t manage to get there, but the Batavia Wharf (close to Lelystad) looks to be something not to miss, if sailing ships are your thing.

You’ll have a great time, I’m sure.
