Avro 504 items…and a nice xmas present!

Following the great pics of the OW 504 restoration I thought I’d share these….As some of you know I have a bit of a weakness for the Avro 504, which is why I become insensible each time I visit OW…. so I’ve been assembling bits and bobs over the past few years….it began with a pilots seat

I took this over to Skysport a while back to let them copy it for theirs, a very good pal is an ace carpenter and he made me a base for it so I have a rather unique office chair (the cushion is made from a parachute!)

Then came the rather nice Courtney Pope prop, the rudder I finished painting it up this year (with some help from some friends who covered it in the correctly stitched WW1 style)

And this was my Xmas present to myself – just the screen, my carpenter chum made the stand…

Now hurry up Skysport – we want another 504 in the air for 2012!

Happy New Year all!

Thanks for the measurements TT. At least I know what to look for now and I’ll see what turns up.:)
The link to Albert Ball’s windscreen was interesting and useful too.

Best regards,

Ha Ha!

Well spotted! Found a bundle of canvas rolls at a steam fair some years ago, its a bus destination roll! 50p each IIRC, got half a dozen (wish I’d had more!) and the rest went on ebay to help fund a house deposit!

Turned the best one into a wall hanging with a couple of bits of dowel and some stitching – my house er is rather eccentric!

TT,

At a slight tangent, what is the destination blind hanging to the left of the rudder from?

Hi Avro Avian,

My screen has the dimensions – W305mm x H155mm

The aeroscreens Bod is referring to are quite readily available – they are ‘plain’ (as opposed to plane) repros and are slightly larger than the original (400mm x 190mm) – but pretty reasonable cost wise – in 20+ years collecting I’ve never seen another Avro logo’d screen but plenty of aeroscreens in the same style:

These are your boys:

http://www.vintagecarparts.co.uk/products/460-container-brooklands-aeroscreen

– they even do square framed ones. My dad has a Brooklands screen for his Triumph TR2, out of devilment I tried my screen with his modern brackets and it fits pretty well.

The advantage you have with the Brooklands ones is of course they are Triplex rather than simple laminated glass….

Aeronut, thank you for your kind offer but I have an original copy, after all, you don’t start without the instructions, do you!

Of course the most famous Avro screen is this – http://albertball.homestead.com/PiercedWindscreen.html

I have the original glass for mine but it was badly shattered, I will still keep it though!

All the best

Texantomcat, if you ever collect enough bits, I have an original copy of the Erecting and Aligining instructions for the 504 that’ll help you put them all together.

Yes, I have had a look at the vintage car parts sites before this thread was started, but none that I have seen so far have the nice little “Avro” logo on the bottom that I have just discovered on this thread.

Edit: On the vintage car sites, they are normally listed as “Auster Screens”.

I’ve been looking at my Avian photos and I believe my Mk III was fitted with windscreens of this style. Now you have me thinking if Mssr Avro used surplus 504 windscreens on the Avian. (Arrgh! Something else I am either going to have to find or recreate!:))
Would you be so kind to measure your windscreen and post the dimensions please?

Best regards,

Paul
