Avro Heritage Centre

I’m not sure if it’s of interest but it would appear that plans have been submitted for the conversion of the fire station at Woodford into the new heritage centre.

Indeed. A little bird tells me that the Avro Heritage guys have got their eyes on the Avian – but so have the Hooton Park Trust, two worthy and relevant homes for the aircraft. However, the Avian is staying put, nice and safe, at MoSI for the forseeable future.

They’re a bit late (but not too late) in the day for a 748. The Blackpool ex-Emerald fleet has gone but one or two ex-mil versions linger on. One or two Andovers have recently met their end at Boscombe Down so that’s fewer still to choose from.

When the nose of HS748, series 2, G-ORAL was saved from Blackpool several years back the complete tail fin was saved too. The AH guys have viewed this and expressed an interest in having it on loan for display. This is (as all UK 748’s were) from a Chadderton/Woodford built/assembled machine, so would make a large, impressive and relevant exhibit, if they decide to have it.

I think I’m correct in saying that the majority of the MOSI aircraft belong to organisations other than the Science Museum, with most of the aircraft belong to the RAF Museum and the Aeroplane Collection.

Whilst the Avro Heritage Centre is a step in the right direction I hope the developers allow some space adjacent to the site for future expansion. Recognition of civil aircraft production would be nice with a HS748, ATP or BAe 146 being displayed. Also hope that cooperation will exist between Avro and the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry. Last time I visited MOSI the aviation hall looked very tried and in need of structural attention. Some airframes had been removed and more have since gone. The Spitfire was moved out only last month. It has been reported that funding cuts are having an effect and maybe the aviation hall is not seen by the management as having enough importance. If indeed this is the case it would be a great shame to see the MOSI aviation collection be neglected. Whilst a new group to the south is just getting started.

Well they have a Vulcan and I thought an AVRO Triplane replica as well.

Spartabus, I’m not sure which building you mean by the flying club pavilion. There is a club house building that was refurbished into an accommodation building for overnight stays. The flying club were in a building further up I think.

Chatting to the guys at the centre this looks like it could be great when it opens, a much needed aviation attraction in an otherwise quiet area for it.

It’ll be great if they can get a couple of aircraft in there too.

I’m sure I have hundreds of blurred photos of aircraft against the leaden airshow skies they are welcome to.

I thought that the flying club pavillion was listed and was an Alexandra Park or Hough End building originally?

The old metal hangar were the ones that came from Alexandra Park I think. They must be in a pretty poor state by now.

The original Hangar 1 as it was known was added to and extended over the years so I doubt will be preserved even although they date from the 1920s. The offices on the front of hangar 1 were blocked off when I worked there 10 years ago now.

I have heard that the Avro sheds will be dismantled and stored. I understand there is no plan to incorporate them into the proposed new development but they may well be used later. I think it unlikely that anyone would ever countenance disposing of/scrapping them such is their importance and relevance to the site and the company generally.

No I don’t but I suspect they will be demolished. I don’t think any of the buildings at Woodford have listed status.
