Avro Lincolns into preservation in 1963

Picked up a few 1963 “Air Pictorial” at a car boot sale on Sunday.

In the April, 1963 issue a small news item titled ‘Last R.A.F. Lincolns’ states that the last five have been withdrawn from RAF service. It went on to say that three were to be flown to 23 MU, Aldergrove “…..and the other two will go to R.A.F. Hullavington, Wilts, for preservation by the Air Historical Branch of the Air Ministry.”

TWO for preservation??? I assume one is the example now at RAFM, Cosford – anyone know what the fate of the other one was?

Roger Smith.

Or the other 2 in Argentina Lincoln II B-004 – on display as B-010 at the National Museum of Aeronautics, Buenos Aires.
Lincoln II B-016 – a gate guardian at the Villa Reynolds airbase, San Luis Province .

‘Veteran and Vintage Aircraft 1968’ by L Hunt lists Lincoln B2 RF398 at RAF Henlow, but in the index under Lincolns it shows two airframes in total surviving in 1968. [NB 22 Mosquitos !!] I assume this second one is RF 342 now at Moorabbin ? Can get some pics as it is down the road….

Thanks for the responses and photos folks.

So it seems one Lincoln (RF398 now at RAFM, Cosford) went to storage for RAFM at RAF Henlow instead of two going to Hullavington.

LAHarve re-Post 5:

Could well be Langar prior to February 1956. In Feb 56 the hangar in the right hand background was burnt down after a Shackleton caught fire during fuel tests. Was it ever rebuilt?

But there again most MU’s cocooned their aircraft after severe corrosion was found during open storage.

My source is ‘Lincolns at War’ by Mike Garbett and Brian Goulding.

Think its Aston Down. It is the only place in the UK that I remember seeing cacooned airframes but I stand to be corrected.

Could be Llandow MU, they had a peri track linking to St Athan and I recall digging in the undergrowth some tears ago with members of SWHAPs, we found Lincoln radomes(and Mustang panels devoid of instruments)
Also found this..www.rafmuseum.org.uk/…/84-A-1182-Avro-Lincoln-RF398.pdf
One of 281 of the UK Lincoln Production total of 528 aircraft built by AWA; … To No.38 MU Llandow. … To No.51 MU Lichfield, Staffs – an Aircraft Storage Unit.

I could well be wrong, but I don’t recall any hangars of that design at Langar.

Most likely AV Roe facility at Langar Notts, many Lincolns were stored there and still visable from the Grantham Nottingham railway line in the early 1960’s

The last RAF Lincolns were operated by 151 Sqn in the ECM role, retiring in Mar-Apr 63. They were all in standard black/grey scheme and I’m pretty sure that they all had their top turrets and guns removed.

I have posted this before, but got no response, it’s a scan of a slide that was in a selection I bought (photographer unknown). I am reposting as it may have some relevance to this thread, unfortunately there is no information on the slide so I do not have a clue to when or when it was taken nor the serial, all I know is it looks to be a Lincoln in storage.

A bit off-the-wall, but I recall a TV programme from Kenley in the mid/late 1960s featuring Raymond Baxter as the presenter and there was quite clearly in the background, a Lincoln with the serial R? ??? (could have been RF?). This date seems a bit late for an RAF Lincoln, going by the above.

From the RAF museum page on the aircraft: [I]In early 1963 it was originally thought that two Lincolns would go to RAF Hullavington, Wilts
for preservation by the Air Historical Branch but this was not proceeded with[/I
