Avro York Roll-Out, Duxford, Sunday

Here are a few pics from yesterdays official unveiling. The “roll-out” actually only got as far as the hangar doors because the outer wings had been fitted after the aircraft was put in and the left hand hangar door does not open to expose the full width! A pity for photographers, as it means the York will only be outside very briefly when it is moved to the new building.
Nevertheless, a lovely ceremony for a beautifully restored aircraft.
Nice to see her complete at last.

Looking good. Justification of all the hours of loving care she was treated to. The sad thing is that I am old enough to remember them in service. IIRC Dan Air had three of them.

Nice Job chaps…

Been following her restoration at Dx for many years like many others here I guess – doesn’t she look good 🙂 ?

Last time I saw her looking like this was back in the early/mid 70’s when she was still sitting outside at the Dan Air Maintenance site at Lasham, with their DC-3 and the Airspeed Ambassador.

Can’t wait for the Ambassador to follow her out into the Dx daylight.

Unfortunatley I can’t get to Dx to see their Avro line up today 😡

I’m sure this ‘York wings’ thing has come up on here before, and I think it was disproven at the time?

BBMF boys?

And yeah, the increased size rudders were there from new.

I’m sure I read somewhere that the outer wings were exchanged for a set of York wings in the 60s.

The rudders are Lincoln type, but they were always on there 😉 That definitely wasn’t what I was thinking of.

Erm, since when?!

Wonderful, well done to all involved. Now there is all that big piston Avro experience, let’s get going on the Shackleton before it turns into a cruciform pile of aluminium mulch on the tarmac.

I remember seeing a great big York-shaped Airfix kit every time I went to Dx as a kid, I’m really pleased it’s finished and the glue is dry. It can’t be long before they have a full set of all the UK bomber derived transports/airliners there. Hastings, Hermes, York, Viking/Valetta…

VERY nice, well done & thank you to everyone involved in a wonderful restoration. That is a real jewel in the British airliner collection.
The last time I saw this aircraft in one piece it was looking very sorry for its self at Lasham. But Dan Air did give me a very nice tour of all the old aircraft & the hangars.

How quickly will it be moved inside?

Is it true that the York uses the same wings and tail as a Lancaster? or is that just a crude generalisation!

It’s true! Obviously the wing centre section is different because of the wider fuselage, but the outer wings are just about identical. In fact, I believe PA474 has York outer wings!

The tail is a similar situation – very similar to the Lancaster, but changed in detail due to the different mounts. The fins/rudders are just about identical.

I agree! Nice line up of AVRO aeroplanes. Could be a special interest day/weekend.

Get as many AVRO types together?

Before they get put n the big tomb! 😡

York and Lancaster is already so! Don’t know how long for. I will post some pictures later. 🙂

Very nice.

Though speaking with something of a bias, I can’t help looking at a York and thinking ‘Ooh, Lancaster parts!’

Is it true that the York uses the same wings and tail as a Lancaster? or is that just a crude generalisation! 😮

I think IWM underestimate the poetenial of ‘rolling out’ some of there static exhibits? Lots of people have mentioned on the ‘Lancaster Outside’ thread that they have/will make a special trip to Duxford to see it.

When it comes to airshows at least it gives them something else incase the weather ruins things.

Be nice to see the Mosquito, Swordfish etc on the Legends flightline!

Oh by the way, an absolutly HUGE WELL DONE and THANK YOU to all those who gave time, skills and no doubt some patience in bringing this stunning aeroplane to life. I remeber seeing it as a child in the restoration hanger…. 🙂

What an oppertunity for a great photo –

Lancaster –

York –

Vulcan –

“Avro’s Finest” all lined up together on last time.

All on the pan together, when was that last seen.

Come on Duxford, do something brave and put them all together just for a couple of days. It wont hurt you know.

I agree. I did ask about whether they would be out at Legends, but they said even the Lanc will likely be inside “the tomb” by then. Great pity.

Aaah takes you back to when the Shackleton first flew in (note the word “flew”). The intention to put it in Hangar 5 asap. Solution when doors didn’t open fully? Saw through the joists that stopped the doors fully opening. Often wonder if they have been fixed. Method of moving the Shack? (one of Avros finest by the way) One Nuffield tractor on right hand u/c and a wilys jeep on the left hand u/c. Sticky left hand door and health and safety didn’t worry them in those days!

Nive (Avro) York by the way.

Awww, a York! Awesome! She looks fabulous.

Cheers for that, on the list for next year’s museum tour.
