Cleaning out the store today and took a little time to clean up a piece of Albemarle metal.
Surprised to find the letters stamped on it were STAR LV573. Same detail found painted on it.
Quick search shows that LV573 was an Albemarle GT MkVI i.e one of the later Glider Tug variants.
Does anyone know what her squadron code was any operational history e.g. whether she flew on D-Day ?
Whereabouts on the starboard side this panel was located ?

Nice detail on the Albemarle in general in the FLIGHT Jan 1944

15 MU and then 20 MU. The only date I have is the SOC date of 30/5/46.
LV573 was one of a batch of 100 delivered between November 1944 and May 1945.
Ah interested. Was just curious as it seems that the HGCU at Brize had the first lot of GT’s (VXXXX) and I did wonder if it had gone to 6 MU which was the south side of the airfield.

So the 100+ Albemarle GT MkV1 S2’s were built – stored and scrapped without ever being used ?

According to the Air Britain register, LV573 was never allocated to any unit other than a MU.
