[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-11-02 AT 05:21 PM (GMT)]What is it when it comes to Alitalia and flying longhaul journeys? Some services are flown from Milan and others from Rome.I recognize Rome is the cultural centre and Milan the business centre, but surely Alitalia’s strategy of operating some longhaul destinations from Rome and others from Milan,is effecting the airline and airports future of ever becoming international hub airports? The airline is splitting up potential customers to two airports, which will mean they will never be up in the legues with LHR,CDG and FRA.
The system of operating major longhaul flights from two airports has not worked for BA (LGW and LHR),Swissair (GVA and ZRH) and also it seems to be happening with SK.So what is it with Alitalia?
I really think that they should decide between one or the other and concentrate all their main longhaul on one airport and have good connections to the other.Does anybody else agree with my point?

RE: AZ:Milan or Rome?
maple leaf, I think Malpensa was always there…
It just had new terminals built for it’s ‘acclaimed’ opening.
to be fair though, I’m not sure other countries aren’t that dissimilar…
AF for example operate their Caribbean flights from ORY, while just about everything else is ex-CDG. (although ORY is quite well integrated in their domestic network)
Don’t most IB longhaul flights originate at BCN, then go via MAD, too (or viceversa)?

RE: AZ:Milan or Rome?
Wasn’t Malpensa opened to much fan fare but never really lived up to expectation because of its distance from the city, unlike Linate which I believe is more closely situated, though I could be wrong. Milan was one of the reasons that KLM pulled out of code share, wasn’t it?

RE: AZ:Milan or Rome?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-11-02 AT 06:51 PM (GMT)]The situation Alitalia is in is probably managed by politics rather than business interests,as usual. The situation with AZ being torn between Milan and Rome is proof. However, what is strange as well is the fact that some flights are operated in Milan from Linate and others from Malpensa.
All Alitalia’s longhaul flights are operated from Malpensa and then some European routes from Linate,if i’m correct. In no other European country is this done.Again this hurts both the airports and airline.I just don’t understand the reasoning behind it..

RE: AZ:Milan or Rome?
Long haul flights from Milan to North America are a pain in the backside (according to a pal of mine who used to fly for them) as you would have to circle to gain altitude in a very heavy plane to clear the Alps before setting off!

RE: AZ:Milan or Rome?
It’s clearly a political situation, I don’t suppose Alitalia actually want it this way.

RE: AZ:Milan or Rome?
Essentially Milan-Malpensa, main AZ hub for longhaul flights.
