B-17 in Australia

Has any been to see/got any photos, of the B-17 cockpit section that is on display at the Warner Bros studios, It is the ex-Memphis Belle mock up used in the film, and I understand that it went there after filming to promote it.

I would like to know what happened to the complete fuselage that was made, I went inside it at Pinewood studios, and it was fantastic, made as per drawings down to pretty much the last rivet

Anyone got any idea?

B-17Man,

…….. and there are three @1/10 scale B1-7 models also used in the show, one with operational remote control turrets etc…………….regards

There were actually five 1/6 scale B-17 models made for the film, just over 17 feet in span. Three were fibreglass static models, with two Radio Controlled Flying models powered by twin cylinder 70cc King petrol engines. They were built by Peter Aston and the team from Model Effects who were also responsible for the B-29 and P-51’s in “Empire of the Sun”. One B-17 was severely damaged during the one wheel landing scene when it fell off the elevated runway. The other was destroyed by fire during a taxiing accident when it weathercocked into a burning GRP B-17.

Photo enhancement

The previous photos can be improved quite a bit but the B-17 shot is a bit fuzzy.

B-17 Man

I visited Movie World last month and I can confirm that the studio tour attraction which includes the Memphis Belle display is closed for redevelopment. What is more disturbing is the news that all of the props (i.e. in the theatrical sense) from the Memphis Belle display have been “junked” (to use the word of my source). So far I have been unable to confirm this. Hopefully it is not so as I know of at least one museum that would be happy to accommodate the contents of the exhibit.

PS Don’t go on the “Wild West” ride unless it’s warm and you are dressed for the beach!

I think Colonel Nissen, if he was still alive, might get a bit upset about being continually mistaken for a Japanese car maker. 🙂

I took a video in and that might capture some better images but here is the only digital image from my camera that actually showed something, the entire “set” which contains a dummy “Nissan Hut” the mockup fuselage tailgroup and wings, and three large scale models are all used in a demonstration of how real life images, a superimposing of “croma key” images are brought to the life on the big screen, an audience member is taken aside and put into a uniform and fly’s the B17 cockpit on a mission with one of the staff, all while viewed by the rest of the audience, the B17 cockpit is set up on actuators etc that allows it to rise up into the “sky” and take formation behind the models and next to a projection screen.

it is very impressive to watch, as are the operating turrets and gunfire from one of the models.

The other pictures are:

Another “Memphis Belle” who was on display at Movie world QLD
(also with impressive turrets?)

Some aircraft buried beneath a mountain at Seaworld QLD

B-17Man,

The Cockpit and whole “aircraft” (in bits) still exists and forms a major interactive display at Movie world in Queensland, it is used to demonstrated movie making a super-imposing, and there are three @1/10 scale B1-7 models also used in the show, one with operational remote control turrets etc.

I saw it with my family last year in October, it was too dark for my digital camera but I will try to post a few pics here later to day (off to work now)

regards
