I believe this is a detail that most B-17 restorations have missed. Didn’t most, if not all combat-ready B-17s have armor-plating installed behind the pilots seats? I am looking for pictures of the type used in B-17 aircraft. I thought that “Mary Alice” had them installed. Anyone know?

Watched a prog about the Bismark the other night, they showed where it was built & laying there in the weeds was a lump of belt armour about 1ft thick. I guess it’s still there as no one can lift it…

Armour plate
The B-17 ‘Mary Alice’ has the armour plate fitted behind the pilots seats. I will try to dig out a photo for you. From looking at various photographs, it looked like a pretty standard fit for B-17’s. I guess a lot of remaining post war B-17’s removed this unecessary items as soon as possible, They are very heavy

According to my -4, Figure 163, Pages 266-267, there were Plate Flak Curtain installations behind each pilots seat. In addition, I understand from rumors, that certain units also installed a section of armor plate in the seat itself, cut to fit the bucket portion of the seat.
To amplify, the armor plate installations for the various crew postitions varied with the production…I.E. certain aircraft from AF 43-39383 and subsequent, and 43-38993 and subsequent, show different applications.
I can give applications for the other crew positions as well, however this was not requested in the above query.
