B-17 with exotic painting

I share with you some photos of a Boeing B-17 bomber with an exotic and unusual camouflage. Does anyone know if this plane entered service and what the function of this painting? I count on your visit.

Well I learned something from it, and with clarification from another forumite ( TY Tony) I am a little more informed.

Other forums are also getting peed off with him.

Quote from another site.
He also already knows the answers to his supposed questions because all he appears to do is plagiarise information from other sites. This latest posting is a typical example. He is a self-publicist, no more no less and, in my mind, should be banned from the site.

The OP does have a knack of introducing us to things already well known to most of us. I’m not sure he’s looking for answers to the questions he poses. To the best of my knowledge, he’s never posted an acknowledgement to the answers posted. As stated before, his posts seem to be to drum up hits on his blog.

Still, B-17 formation ships seem to be less common than the well-publicized B-24 aircraft doing the same job.

Any reason why?

-B-17 units simply didn’t use formation assembly ac as much?
-A different set or regulations? The 2nd AD (primarily a B-24 unit) required them whereas the other ADs (with B-17s) didn’t?
-The Liberators were simply documented more.
Or, these are long shots so bare with me…I’m throwing out ideas…Did the B-24 units need them because of different (worse?) cockpit visibility than the B-17? Different weather in Norfolk compared to the B-17 bases which were generally further south?

They never went to war, they were retired aircraft, after they all formatted on them they would land and the bombers would go.

Definitely stands out,, to both sides of the conflict. Not sure I would want to be in that one.

They were used to aid building up the bomber formations, each group would have different ones to make them easy for the formations to see and formate on, they also had a lot of liberators in similar schemes.

They were war weary bombers, see http://www.mellophant.com/forums/showthread.php?9542-Judas-Goats
