Other than the Roger A. Freeman books “The Mighty Eighth” & “The Mighty Eighth In Colour”, are there any books which detail the use of B-24 Assembly Ships?
Anything with 3-way views and/or profiles, colour photographs etc?
The role of the Assembly Ships and its contributions seem to be an often overlooked aspect, which seems incredible given the striking and bizarre paint schemes applied to these aircraft.
I’m sure if there were more B-24’s airworthy today we would have one painted in such a scheme. It would certainly be a show-stopper!

And don’t forget the additional PB4Y glazing variations 😀

Having acquired some B24 navigator blister windows – I had to buy the book Consolidated Mess to try and get my mind around the myriad B24 glazing options.
These pictures show the variety of turret, nose glazing, side window glazing etc. that was in use by the B24’s produced.

The crews used to love assembly ship duty.
Though generally very tired airframes, they were also stripped out and could be a lot faster than the fully loaded, crewed and equipped combat aircraft. Plus they didn’t have to face flak or fighters, so once the bomber stream was on it way they could hoon around E Anglia for the sheer enjoyment of flight – as it should be, and as it is today thanks to them and the men of Bomber Command.

Thanks for the information, mmitch.
Incidentally, I’ve noticed Corgi have included the B-24 Assembly Ship “You Cawn’t Miss It” into their collection.

I visited the Aviation Museum at Norwich a few years ago and they had an excellent display of models and drawings of these aircraft.
