B-26 Marauder Tail Pod

I came across this photo.
Anyone any details on what the pod is under the tail.
A Martin B-26G-25-MA Marauder (s/n 44-68160) from the 586th BS, 394th BG. Of Major General Samuel E. Anderson’S 9Th Bombardment Div., Looses Two 2000 Pound Bombs Two Miles Above The Rail Yard At Ulm, Germany, Midway Between Stuttgart And Augsburg.

I was led to believe that it was a collector for spent shell cases.

The open rear hatch is the waist gun position…there’s one on each side.

Edit re the shell collector: This was introduced on B-26C-25s heading for the MTO, and later made standard on B-26Gs from serial number 43-34415 onwards.

A number of sources suggest that it’s a tail bumper, fitted to some late production aircraft.

I’d also be interested as to why the rear hatch is open?
